Resetting again -- was this a mystery, and was it ever solved?

After being fine for a while, tonight was the second time in less than a week that the last-visited time reset while I was still here. What can I do about this?

Yep, happening again, for the past week or so.

Try deleting your cookies for the board, then log in again.

Learn to live with it. It’s something that can’t be fixed, because they can’t figure out what causes it.

I hadn’t had it happen for months and I’ve gotten a few times in the past week.

I’ve mentioned this before, and I accept that it doesn’t work for everybody (for some weird reason, based on all the messages I’ve read the problems seem to be user-dependent), but it has behaved much better for me since I started always explicitly logging out of SDMB when I am done, and turning off the checkbox that says to keep you logged in. Side effect appears to be increased frequency of it occasionally not logging in when I try to do so (no error messages, so it isn’t an id/password problem; it just stays logged out), but that is a lot less of a hassle than last visit resetting.

Same here. Okay for a while, now almost every time again for about the past week. Has anything changed with the server?

And I do explicitly log out too.

No diss intended, but why does it matter?

It marks all threads as read, so that it is impossible to pick out easily what has been posted since ones last visit.

Since the new ads kicked in, I’ve been staying logged in and it’s been happening at least once a day. Usually the first time I return to the forum list from the first thing I’ve read.

Ah. I never look at my last-logged date, but I have run into weird situations where it says “All these threads have not been updated since your last visit, but here ya go.” Must be the same bug.

I can’t figure out if or how this might help, but I’ve noticed on my home network, this never happens to me. At one particular coffee shop I frequent, it happens pretty much every time (but not on other public networks). It’s the same laptop and browser in all cases, so it must be something in their router or ISP.

Further to my last message, I had to log in at least half a dozen times in rapid succession today before the log in would “take”. As I said above, it’s not an id/password problem; it just goes back to the screen you get when you are not logged in, without any error messages.

I’ve found it tends to go in cycles, and when it’s going through one of those phases, it will happen no matter where I access the Board from.

I have a small, sneaking guess that this might have to do with one or more of the ad affiliates. The way certain ad companies interact with sites leads to odd behaviors like this. Especially viglink style things that sweep thru an entire page looking for keywords to “underscore”.

I’m a member, so SDMB doesn’t try to show ads (at least, it shouldn’t). In addition, I use Adblock Plus, so hopefully any it did try to show would be blocked.

AdBlock and such blocks the calls to external sites, they don’t block the chunks of Javascript running (usually) down at the bottom of the page that sets up the calls to such sites. These scripts can be quite involved.

(I block on a case-by-case basis, depending on how evil the ad service is. Which means pretty much all of them.)

I don’t know how the board implements no ads for paying members.

Do a “view source” on a page and see what you get at the top and bottom.

The last time this subject came up, Ed eventually stated that they do believe they know what causes it, and it’s not something they’re able to fix at this time. I do not believe that he stated exactly what the problem was, but it didn’t seem like it’s anything user-correctable.

Happened to me the last three times I visited, over the last two days. On two different computers.

Just FYI, you could try opening your forum list, then opening each thread in a different tab/window from the forum list. That way, you just go back to the forum list you already have opened rather than refreshing that list. All the threads stay marked as unread. You just work down or up the list.

This is very annoying - when will it be fixed?
