"Real" American cheese

Is there such a thing as American cheese made of something besides oil and water? Way back when, they used to call Kraft singles and all that American cheese and since then have called it “cheese food” for reasons stated in another thread. But does American cheese still exist as a bona fide dairy product?

“I guess one person can make a difference, although most of the time they probably shouldn’t.”

Well, I have seen my grocery store advertise “American cheese” (not cheese food) in the deli section of their flyer (this week, $1.99 per half pound), so unless there is an exemption for that type of advertising (i.e. they don’t have to add the “food” for some reason), I’d say Yeah, it still exists.

Just for comparison, I checked through to see if I could find an old flyer advertising Kraft, to see how that was advertised (as “cheese” or as “cheese food”). Didn’t find one, but did find the store brand in one, which was listed as “American Singles” but with a photo of a package that states “pasteurized process cheese food” (it can be read clearly), and Borden in another, also listed as “American Singles” and showing a (smaller) photo labeled as “pasteurixed process cheese food” (that one can only be read if you know what it says). Don’t know if that reveals anything much, except that they don’t (and perhaps can’t) call it “cheese”.

I was always under the impression that American cheese was just a very mild version of chedder cheese.

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

Heres a different take on the subject.

Damn, must still be jittery after the crash. I meant to post a couple snippets from the “article”

“Many people don’t know where American Cheese came from. Think about it. Your mom or dad has put this cheese in your lunchboxes when you where kids. You never asked “Where did American Cheese come from?” We always have taken it for granted, who was the genius that thought of this excellent dairy product? Well the answer goes back to the formation of our country and it even involves George Washington.”

And,

After spending a night partying and drinking a little too much, the Swiss nationals pulled out some cheese. Davis had his American cheese and he was happy with it, but because he was drunk, one thing led to another and the Swiss boys had him trying some of the Swiss Psycho cheese.
