I guess the answers might be more opinions than facts, so I put this in IMHO.
In a year or two, we’re going to move to another state. We now live within commuting distance of major Silicon Valley employers, which is a hot selling area at present, and which I hope will always sell well even if there’s a bit of a downturn.
I haven’t sold a house in twenty-two years, and I’d like to pick your brains. Do you think it would be better to first move into temporary housing at our destination town, simultaneously moving our belongings into storage, so that the realtor can “stage” our old vacant home? That would involve waiting in temporary housing until our old place sells, which sounds kind of open-ended to me.
Or is it a better idea to stay in the old place until it sells, and then move into temporary housing at the destination city (moving the belongings into storage), and then start to hunt for a new place? Our old place wouldn’t have the benefit of staging, but then again we wouldn’t be biting our nails until it sold, as in scenario #1 above.
I remember how stressful it was to do the contingency sale twenty-two years ago, and that’s why I’d rather move into temporary housing for either option.
