Internet Explorer was crashing on me four or five times a day, so I decided to download Netscape and give it a shot. It’s much more stable, but I can’t figure out how to get it to save my passwords. Some sites seem to save the information in a cookie, and Netscape can handle those obviously, but Explorer saves passwords for any site. Can Netscape save login names and passwords? How?
AFAIK, Netscape does not save http-auth passwords. MSIE does this because, once again, they show an astounding disregard for system security in the name of “convenience.”
Just re-type your password when you go to those sites.
Netscape 6 Preview release 3 seems to have the ability to same user names and passwords, although I don’t know how stable it is.
I use Gator to save all my passwords and other internet stuff. You can get it at http://www.gator.com and best of all, it is free.
Actually, you can save the passwords in the URL, I think. I forget the exact syntax, its something weird like
http://username:password:www.sampleURL.com
I’m sure its in the docs somewhere. Just save that in your bookmarks file. But this is a security risk because your account and password are stored in plaintext on your computer. Anyone with access to your computer can see your account info.
Oops, looks like the Ultimate BB mangled that URL. No way to demonstrate it here in a message. Sorry.

This only works for http-auth (or ftp) passwords. Many sites don’t use this mechanism, for example most online banks I’ve used don’t use it but their own authentication programs. This disallows use of the name in the URL.
IE uses the fact that the password is in a field of type ‘password’ (i.e. the asterisks show instead of your password) and remembers the next time you go to that page to enter the same password. Go MS Security experts!

It does not force you to use it. If you don’t want it just don’t use it. Your argument makes no sense.
One trick I use with some forms: Copy the form to your computer and change the code to offer the fields already filled by default. Then you just have to click submit.
I have about a dozed different websites that I manage plus bank accounts and other stuff. I have an HTML page in my computer that has buttons that automatically submit and open whatever page I want.
Can Netscape save passwords in the password field? No, it cannot. It can save usernames, via a cookie, but not passwords.
Netscape 6 is supposed to have that autosave feature, like IE, however, the final release is not out yet. You could always try the third preview release, but expect a lot of crashes.
Netscape comes with docs, why not read them? Just hit F1 anytime & read or search. Not quite what you want but here is some info:
To choose or change a password: Open
the Security Info window by clicking the
padlock icon, then select Passwords.
Follow the directions in the window. Click
More Info for additional information about
choosing a password. After you choose
your password and click OK, you will be
prompted to select an option that tells
Communicator when to ask for your
password.
If you forget your password or if someone
else set it, go to Troubleshooting.

by the way… most places have this “save password for one year” which is pretty nice when you are the only person to use your comp.
