Really good trance, techno, elctronica, etc. ?

I have only recently discovered this type of music.

It is pretty.

Anyone have suggestions as to what I should pick up? Look for? Avoid? Are there any “classics” of these genres? What are the exact differences? I am currently listening to “born slippy by underworld, it is pretty.

You should go to Ishkur’s Guide to Electronic Music.

I don’t have the URL bookmarked here and don’t want to bother doing a search for it, but if you do a google search for “Ishkur’s Guide to Electronic Music” you should find it. Really nifty site, has samples of several dozen genres of electronic music, with commentary, brief historical notes, etc. Takes a while to load, though, even with broadband.

Try Tim “Love” Lee’s “Tales of the Selector.” You will want to have sex and if you play it for the right person you will.

(nearly) all good bands, but trance? Techno? Nahh.

How about:

The Age of Love
Leftfield
Paul Oakenfold
CJ Bolland
Jeff Mills
Gigi d’Agostino
Rabbit in the Moon
Hardfloor
Carl Craig
Carl Cox
Nightmares on Wax
Laurent Garnier
Andrew Weatherall
Coldcut

(etc)

Emergency Broadcast Network, Telecommunication Breakdown.

(That’s a recommendation, by the way.)

Try the Bonkers set of albums for some hard trance / house.
You can listen to some (a bit too commercial IMHO) trance here or you can download some (non-copyrighted) mixes here (be warned - they are BIG files)

I’d say Underworld’s Born Slippy is pretty classic. Gotta love Chemical Brothers Block Rockin Beats and Daft Punk’s Da Funk too. But there’s heaps - just keep an ear to the ground for anything you might like.

Orbital is a nice place to start. I really like their albums II and Insides, but they’re all good, pretty much.

Check out the track Halcyon+on+on. You’ll probably like it.

Someone already mentioned Leftfield, but can I further endorse this by recommending their “Leftism” album as as good an introduction as anything out there. There are also tons of good compilations available: I’d recommend pretty much anything produced under the Cream or Ministry of Sound imprint as a good overview of the current state of play. If you like a slightly dubbier/chilled sound, try Massive Attack’s “Protection”. Also try an see if you can stream Radio 1’s (in the UK) Friday and Saturday night output. I can’t check just now, but I’m sure a lot of this is archived on the BBC site.

The Beatles were doing electronica back in 1966! Listen to “Tomorrow Never Knows” on their Revolver album.

Excellent recommendations, Crusoe.

I’ll add:
The Avalanches
Deep Dish
dZihan (pronounced “Jay-sahn”…dont’ ask me why) & Kamien, Gus Gus
Herbert
Scott Hendy
L.S.G.

Prodigy

BT

Bt is pretty, Prodigy is not really pretty, but they do play kickass electronica.

The Propellerheads are pretty too.

Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works Vol. II is one of the most gorgeous things ever recorded.

Also:
DJ Tiesto In Search of Sunrise Vol. 3
The Orb UFOrb
The KLF White Room
Early Moby

I’ll go along with Prodigy, BT, Propellerheads, The Avalanches, Leftfield, Orbital, Chemical Brothers…shoot, most everything mentioned so far.

Hell yeah, BT’s Movement In Still Life kicks ass.

Goodness!! I feel overwhelmed. Can you guys suggest particular songs? I did enjoy the Halycon number, I got it off the excellent “Hackers” soundtrack.

Question from one who knows nothing about electronica: Where do Fatboy Slim, Moby, Basement Jaxx, Daft Punk and Crystal Method fall in? What’s the difference between trance, techno and electronica?
