Really need the most recent info on the best e ink device with keyboard for writing?

Hey all,
So basically, here’s the issue:

I really really need a portable e-ink device that connects to a bluetooth keyboard and allows for writing and saving documents. It would also need to be able to pull up other documents for comparison. It would be great to be able to access Dropbox and save docs to the cloud, but if I have to do without that, I can. There just needs to be some way to get the docs off the reader. It has to be, HAS TO BE an e-ink screen for medical reasons. I have genetic vision problems and it is just not good for me to be staring at an LCD screen all the time… I need to save that time for applications that can’t be used in any other way, like graphic design and video editing.

The ideal would be an e-ink laptop (but that doesn’t exist as far as I know.) Freewrite has some of this but seems ridiculously expensive for what is, especially with such a small screen. If I have to spend that much, it really seems like it should be possible to get more functionality for the money. I’ve heard that this is at least possible with an Onyx reader, but all the info I can find about it seems to be at least a year out of date. Things change fast! I’ve asked this question on a couple of dedicated e-reader forums, but questions there don’t seem to get a lot of answers, and everyone here is so smart and helpful…

Suggestions? Thoughts? Ideas? All would be greatly appreciated!

I don’t think e-ink screens have a fast enough refresh rate for word processing, unless something has changed recently.

I wonder if a transflective screen would work for you? A bit of googling suggests that there’s not much of a market for them but there might be something out there that fits your needs. My watch has one and it’s pretty good. Excellent with a bright external light source.

They definitely do exist. Freewrite is one example for sure. Here’s their page. The problem is that it’s $500, and I really don’t think that it’s worth it for what you get. Such as… a 5.5 inch screen.

A 13.3 inch e-ink regular monitor is also a thing. it’s the Dasung E-Ink Paperlike Pro. Here’s the Amazon page. But… it’s not exactly the most portable thing, it obviously doesn’t replace a laptop, and it’s $1,149 (!!!) There’s also a $800 Onyx reader that works.

It just seems like there has to be a better/cheaper solution than all this though…

Too niche I guess.

There is a huge opportunity here for someone to make a lot of money in the next few years. The aging population is skyrocketing and these people need ways to read computer screens that is much easier on their eyes. I had to start thinking about this issue WAY before most people do, but the rest of the population is going to get there eventually.

Since the OP is looking for advice, let’s move this to IMHO.
