Realplayer Virus Extrodinare A.K.A. Truth in advertising

So I went to a superbowl party this weekend where I was asked about a slow pc (they know that I know ya know?) by another visiter to the house. I was pointed at our Hosts pc to show them how to clean up the start folder and do a defrag when it happend
in the corner

all the way down on the right

WAS THAT MOTHERFUCKING RESOURCE HOGGING PIECE OF SHIT KNOWN AS Realplayer ™

Dear realplayer, your software is fucking shit, ardvarks on crack could write better code in the dark with japanese keyboards. Not only does your software suck ass, its 100% garbage. nothing ever put to video in realplayers format is worth the time it takes to watch. So in light of the fact that your software has no legitimate reason to even exist perhaps you can explain WHY THE FUCK ITS ON EVERY GODDAMNED COMPUTER I LAY EYES ON OTHER THAN MY OWN? more importantly WHY THE FUCK DOES IT RUN ON START UP? WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK? if they want to watch some shitty video recorded in your shitty format they will click the video and that will OPEN YOUR FUCKING SOFTWARE AND RUN IT THEN, as opposed to HAVING THAT SHIT RUNNING 24/7 MAKING OTHERWISE REASONABLY FAST PC’S RUN LIKE SHIT.

if your software has no reason to run on start up then perhaps you shouldnt set the install to default run on start up. thanks you your fucked up code no less than 20 of my friends and relatives have a growing hatered for you and your products. after I am done removing shit like this from start up computers shockingly enough do crazy things like start up in 2 minutes instead of 12, they do other nutty things like respond to mouse clicks in seconds instead of minutes. and just to get really REALLY insane, they are actually a tool thats pleasent to work with instead of a frustration fest.

yes I realise that Realplayer isnt the only software like this…its the one thats on every pc in existance as far as I can tell though.

fuck you realplayer, die, in a fire.

Oh Holy Lordy, Amen!

I have a long standing hatred for Real and Realplayer. I recently took a job writing software for the career center at my university.

The first thing they let me know was the Real was coming to campus to recruit! (said with much enthusiasm from a hapless counselor to a computer science student)
The first thing I let them know was that I’d rather clean toilets than be in any way associated with Real’s garbage.

Have to agree with you there; However, there are alternatives. :cool:

Realplayer is also chock full of spyware as well, so I have been told, and personal evidence seems to confirm it. Just yesterday, I finally cleaned out my PC of the CoolWebSearch crap. I have been running ad-aware and CWSshredder every time I restarted, yet the crap was still coming on my PC. Finally, on Sunday, microsoft jumped in and gave me constant error messages. Not just when going online, but whenever I opened a graphic file. I got a case number and spent two evenings, mostly waiting for assistance. Although once I got assistance, they stayed with me. Cleaned out all cookies and other shit, from the DOS screen (haven’t used that in years). Then updating Ad-aware and running it. Then going deep into the registry to delete a couple of files.

My home page stays the same, and my PC runs better. I have pondered just where my PC got hijacked? The main suspect, IMHO, is RealPlayer. It’s icon is not at the bottom right right now, but let me watch one video and it will go there, until I go to My Computer window and remove it.

CWS and Realplayer are connected. Please, someone step in and confirm my suspicion. I am currently researching it, and I have found the two mentioned in the same sentence. I will soon delete EVERY program related to Realplayer from my PC.

I´ll have to try that!

Oooo! A rant I can respond to!

Real Player is a royal friggin pain and you will not find that program on my computers. Music Match isn’t that much better and they all want to call home or pester you with what great stuff they have to sell. I really hate that shit. There are lots of people getting the CoolWeb Search but I don’t think you pin on that Real Player.

I have real player installed because I need it to play episodes of This American Life (www.thislife.org). Any suggestions for workarounds?

Amen! I utterly detest that ad-ridden, lying, spying sack of shitware and will NEVER let it run on any machine of mine. Why these assholes Real are still around doing business is a constant source of bafflement. They should have died years ago.

<hijack, sorta>
And, according to ActivistCash.com, the founder has ties to PETA…which increases their evil quotient even more…
</hijack, sorta>

Two links, above you, if you missed 'em.

I wouldn’t trust anything from ActivistCash without doublechecking first.

RealNetworks founder Ron Glaser, through Glaser Progress Foundation, has donated money to several animal and nature ortiented organizations including PETA, The US Humane Society, The Jane Goodall Institute, Earth Day Network, and Doris Day Animal Foundation.

That’s probably because RealPlayer is one of the programs that CWS likes to hijack.

BTW: from what I can tell from Google, RealDownload and RealJukebox plugin are the true spyware culprits. The problem with RealPlayer seems to stem from it having been bundled with Comet Cursor and not the RealPlayer software itself. IME, it’s possible for such software to become bundled with spyware without the author’s knowledge. I ended up with Gator on my PC at work by downloading a weather app that was being promoted by a local TV station. Seems to me that the station wouldn’t have been promoting the app if they had known it came with spyware.

Oops, change that to “RealDownload and possibly RealJukebox” and disregard “plugin”.

I also found a site on how to have RealPlayer without the headaches.

According to BoingBoing, you can get an adware-free version of (buffering…buffering…waitforit…) RealPlayer from the BBC.
