Reasons Civ 3 makes my life miserable.

I’m sorry - it must be before the coffee kicked in. I read this as defecated

Corrado, you’re a dick. I had quit playing this fucking game for some time now but after reading this thread, here I am again…dammit anyway…

Unless I missed it in Unix Geek’s post about the patch (thanks Unix), they didn’t fix coastal fortresses.

'Course, the next question I have is where can I get the patch and how do I use it - I’m not good at much beyond “put the CD in, click Install, then wait a while and play.”

Sua

Well, according to Firaxis, Coastal Fortresses were never broken- they’re just so damned wimpy that most people didn’t notice the effects they had.

Patch should be Friday or Saturday, probably available at civ3.com.

Also, Number Six- you do know that Democracies are immune to propaganda, right?
Finally,

That made my morning. Thanks, man.

Sua,
As soon as I get it and get it installed I will post back instructions for you. You will probably have to save it to your desktop, double click it, and wait a while, then play.

Any time guy

Now I’m gonna go play Gruntz because I’m not frustrated enough from Civ III…

I agree. There should be multiplayer. But here’s something interesting.

While I was browsing the Civ 3 CD, I noticed a .txt file called “jackal.txt”. It has curious things like:

Interesting, no? It sure looks like on-line gaming script to me.

Anyone have any ideas about this?

#N+1: Lissen up you stupid AI…the “Breed like rabbits” strategy doesn’t make any sense. You are at peace with me. We have been for 3000 years and have a rock solid alliance against the hated Aztecs. So why, pray tell, do you ALWAYS start building cities up against my borders. Cities that ALWAYS fall into rioting because you can’t support them, then build MORE cities inside their borders, further into my territory and so on? There needs to be a setting on the game editor screen controlling fecundity.

#N+2: Aluminum shouldn’t be as rare as it is (neither should saltpeter). There (as far as I know) haven’t been wars over Aluminum and/or saltpeter. However, some tweaking in the game editor fixed that.

#N+3: Where’s the “patrol” option for soldiers? I’m sick of the hated Aztecs coming in via that tiny patch of land and starting wars. I want to be able to tell a soldier “Hey, dude…walk back and forth from HERE to HERE. Don’t let anyone by”

#N+4: Jungles. I hate jungles. And really…despite the fact that I’m not particularly Green-minded…Jungles should produce something and when they’re cut down shouldn’t turn into grassland. IIRC, you get swamps or plains or deserts when you cut down jungles in real life. Luckily, the game editor allows a lot of futzing with stuff like this.

#N+5: Rebasing air units is fun and all, but…c’mon. Planes don’t teleport.

#N+6: Resources should be proportional to the size of the world, not a fixed amount. IE It seems that resources are LOTS harder to find on a huge world than a tiny one. If the amount of resource tiles were proportional to the number of total tiles this wouldn’t be the case. And it seems to be.

#N+7: Hard bargaining is all well and good, but c’mon…10,000, the printing press and electricity for a 1 Spice? The AI is a whole lot fonder of it’s luxuries than I am. They’re nice to have, but not at the dollar amount that the AI wants.

Fenris

Ah. Well, that’s intuitive! Thanks.

Thanks John! That did indeed work, and I was able to go back to a saved game and eke out a space victory without being dragged into any Chinese border squabbles.

I’m “Scylla the foolish” on Chieftan level. Whee.

Corrado, I know that Democracies are immune. The program tells me. What I’m talking about is the few times I get my intelligence agency set up and try to use propaganda against an enemy and get a list of cities. I choose a size 6 city surrounded by three of my 15+ cities, each with all the cultural improvements available at the time (library, university, colleseum, cathedral), each over 1000 culture, and I get the “your attempt at propaganda was unsuccessful” message. Every single time I’ve ever used it in any game.

GRRRRR! I want to try this game, but my POS monitor won’t go over 800x600.

I beefed up the Coastal Fortresses by 50% so in the mod I posted about here. You might want to give it a try, I made a number of changes to enhance the game.
