Anyone know how to make homemade powdered chocolate milk mix, ala Nestle Quik? I practically live on chocolate milk, but buying commercially made chocolate drink mix is getting pricey for as much as I use it (about 3.00@lb which lasts me about a week and a half). I am hoping that if I can make the same mix homemade, it will be much cheaper.

I tried making it from scratch but it was unsatisfactory.

I can’t find any recipes online for it. They all suggest already commercially made powder mix. arrgh

Hot Chocolate milk mix is essentially sugar, cocoa and a tiny pinch of salt. This mix won’t blend well into cold milk unless you have a damn good electric stirrer (or unless you make it with hot milk and cool it). Cocoa still isn’t enormously cheap, although you’ll use less cocoa than chocolate milk poweder, simply because chocolate milk poweder is about 60% sugar 40% cocoa. (figures based on memory, so may be incorrect)

When you say you “practically live on chocolate milk”, was that hyperbole?

If not, you really need to start getting a balanced diet. There’s no point in making yourself physically unwell through a restricted diet. Get some fruit and veg down your neck. Learn to cook, if you don’t already cook. Learning to cook can do a person a power of good.

Incidentally, if you want to keep on a milk shake tip, bananas make a great shake when chopped up and blended with milk.

I dunno about making it yourself, but do you have any stores that sell in bulk in your area? Seems like chocolate milk powder would be one o’ those things that you could buy in bulk at a much reduced price. That’s what I’d try.

Yes.

My diet consists of much more (real food) than chocolate milk. I just love the stuff, and drink about three 12 ounces glasses of the stuff a day. Mmmmmm milk! :::stands up from chair, glancing around room::: My name is MSK and I’m a Chocoholic

and to clarify, I drink COLD chocolate milk, 95% of the time. The recipe I seek is for COLD choc’ milk powder mix.

I would try sifting a mixture of about 50% Hershey’s cocoa and 50% powdered sugar together(you may need to play around with the formula to get the level of chocolate you want), with a few drops of vanilla extract added when you mix into the milk(I would personally use vanilla sugar which takes time and real vanilla beans to make, and you’re looking for a quick and cheap fix). My concern is, though, is that you’re probably not going to save all that much money by having to buy the cocoa, sugar, and vanilla. I think Athena’s got an idea with looking into a store that sells in bulk like Costco or Sam’s Club (if you have a Smart & Final in your town, you do not need a membership to shop there). You may save a little by making your own mix, but in relation to having to buy more items, the mess and time of making it, you may do better by buying it in bulk.

I’ll just be off to get some isopropyl alcohol to clean my hyperbole detector…
