Our printer is on its last legs. Can you recommend a new one? All we want to do is print black and white pages of text. Fast is always good, but reliable and affordable is better. Do they even make black-only printers these days?
The way prices have come down, your best bet may be a small laser printer. I have a Samsung, and it’s much better than the black version of an inkjet.
Before you choose one, however, take some time to figure out the cost and availability of replacement toner cartridges. I’m sort of stuck with going back to the store I bought the printer from, or ordering off the Internet.
Another vote for small laser printer. I have an HP1012 which has served me very well.
We have a Canon i475D, which we’ve been very happy with. I think it was less than $100, and the cartridges are much cheaper than other brands. (On www.lasermonks.com, you can get both black&white and color cartridges for about $5 each.)
In my experience, the cost of ink cartridges usually far outweighs the cost of the printer itself so factor that into your buying decision.
That’s the model I was going to buy–until I checked out the Konica-Minolta PagePro 1350W. Got mine at Staples for $99. The full toner replacement will cost me about $80.
CLarity? Astonishing. It ain’t exactly whisper quiet when powering up, but then I don’t live in a law library, so no problemo. I like its looks better than the HPs, but both make killer machines.
If you’re just doing B&W, go laser. Inkjets are for saps.
