Recommend a Cell Phone Company

I canceled my Sprint PCS account today. I have never used anyone but Sprint so I don’t know anything about other companies. I am now in the market for a new cell phone so naturally I have a few questions.

What company do you use?

Are the charges reasonable?

Are you happy with the company?

Are the bills easy to understand?

Are there any hidden charges?

Why did you choose that particular company?

How is the customer service department?

Anything else you would like to add would be appreciated.

Well unless there were unforseeable circumstances that casued you to cancel your cell phone you should have waited until you had another provider. That way you could have taken your phone number with you. But its not the end of the world.

Some of your questions are going to vary even with people with the same provider. Most of us have different plans for different needs. We live in different areas with different coverage and availability. Some are happy, some are content and some are waiting for their contracts to expire so they can go else where.

My best advice is to talk to friends, family and neighbors that live near you. Find out who they use and their experiences. No two callers use their service the same so you need to understand when and where you use your cell phone the most. By now you should have delveloped a trend in your calling habits so you should know what you need in terms of mins and coverage.

I am, curious why you canceled Sprint. Obviously you weren’t happy but what was it that you had problems with? Didn’t the Retention Department try to sweeten the deal with a much better plan?

To answer your questions:
*Sprint
*Yes: 750 daytime mins, unlimited sprint to sprint calls, unlimited nights and weekends for $40 per month. For an additional $10 I also get the Vision service.
*Yes

  • Yes, bills outline every call I make and itemize all charges. I can also check my bill and pay on line.
*I haven’t been hit with any hidden charges
  • I chose Sprint for a few reasons but I also like that I could go any where in the country that sprint had coverage and use only my mins. I had many vacations where friends were regretting their phone bills when they home. I never had to worry about that.
*I have not had any problems with CS but I haven’t needed to use them too much either.
  • Talk to people you know about their plans and service. They should be able to help answer questions in your area better. Where you use a phone the most could be a dead zone with a certain provider.

One last thing. Don’t get suckered into any plans because of a free phone. Its the plan, coverage etc that matters more than the phone. Also, if possible I recommend using the providers own retail store. I have heard horror stories from people who signed up for service at stands in the mall or or through mailers. If you can’t get to the store you should be able to use their website

Good luck.

I canceled my Sprint account two weeks ago. They simply refused to give me another phone on my plan (for my girlfriend). I went to AT&T (not knowing they we’re being purchased by Cingular) and got signed up for 2 phones. They screwed up the sign up process and only put one phone on the plan, the other was paying 40 cents a minute for calls. They said it would all be fixed in a couple days and would send me an email…still no email a week later. That said, they did give me what I wanted, gave me two free phones and a rebate for $50 on them so in fact they paid me to take the phones. The reception and call clarity is about the same as Sprint, I still can’t get a good signal in my apartment.

I’ve been a customer of Verizon for several years & recently added my SO to the plan. I really don’t have any complaints about them, and have found their service to be mostly consistent and reliable, although reception & sound quality can suffer a bit out in the boonies with older phones. My phone is a 2-year old Motorola, while the SO has a new Samsung and virtually no problem with reception.

For a National calling plan, which means free long distance and no roaming as long as I’m in the Verizon network (which is easily determined just by looking at the readout on my cell phone), it’s $40 per month (plus tax) for 400 anytime minutes, 1000 mobile to mobile, and unlimited nights & weekends. Adding a 2nd phone number to the plan (identical features, fewer weekday minutes) added about $20 to the bill. I find the bills to be easy to understand, without any hidden charges - they’re up front about roaming fees and overtime minute charges.

I ended up with Verizon because a friend of mine worked in their customer service department & gave them a good reference. I stuck with Verizon because I’ve had no problems with them, and their customer service has been good the few times I’ve dealt with them (always to change my service, never for problems with the account). At this point, unless their service took a drastic and sudden turn for the worse, the only way I’d switch companies would be if I lived in an area they didn’t provide service to.

E,

You didn’t mention how many minutes you use or anything else about your usage, however,…

I use my cell phone very little. Most ads I read for phone are for huge amounts of minutes. I was looking for something on the other end… what was the cheapest per month deal out there. I saw some for $15 per month that offered very little and with taxes came to $20 some per month.

My wife and I each switched to Virginmobile… and it’s GREAT for the low amount user. You only pay for the time used… in advance… and you debit your account. For example, I deposit, via credit card, 20 and use that amount, at 25 cents or 10 cents per minute. They charge 25 cents per minute for the 1st 10 minutes and 10 cents per minute for any other usage that day. Doesn't matter if it's long distance or not. Same price. You press a button on your phone to monitor the amount of in your account. Also, press a button if you want to ad $ to your account. There’s one additional requirement, you must BUY $20 minimum, every 90 days. So if you ONLY use that $20 over 3 months, your monthly cost is $6.77 per month.

Also, the coverage is great. It uses the Sprint system. Also, you get no bill or pay no tax. It’s included the the per minute charge. But, if you want a record of all calls, text messages, or voice messages, you can go to their website and down load your records.

Strongly recommend, for the low minute user. I’d say if you use under 100 to 120 minutes per month you do good with Virgin.

Check out their website… They company also sells phones and minutes to people who don’t have credit cards and want to pay cash…
