It was the cocoa. The dark chocolate isn’t bad. There are a zillion coffee varieties and some of them are quite good. Don’t judge the Keurig’s coffee-fu by the taste of the cocoa.
I bought a gadget that heats and foams milk in a pot, so I launch it and the Keurig at the same time, go tend (ahem) to my 2 cats. When I get back in the kitchen and wash my hands, coffee and milk are both ready to be poured together.
I’m with you. The Keurig device I used was loud too. So loud I was reluctant to use it for fear of waking everyone. If you want to try all the different coffee pods, or whatever they call them, that could be interesting for a while. Otherwise, I want to be able to use any coffee I like and I want more than one cup. That spells Mr. Coffee to me.
If I want something different I have a small espresso maker, a Vietnamese coffee maker and I can make cowboy or Turkish coffee on the stove if I’m in that mood. There is no chance the Kuerig can make any of those correctly. And the pods are expensive and, I suspect, not the freshest or the best coffee.
I live alone and one reason I like them is they’re less trash; just used K-cups v. grounds and filter, plus they save on water since you don’t have a pot to wash.
I’ve got a question for you Keurig experts. I’m thinking of getting a Keurig mini for my apartment. I don’t drink coffee at all but my g/f likes a cup on the weekends when she spends the night. I’d like to have one handy to accommodate her. She currently has one of these guys but she seems generally disappointed with the results and it’s kinda messy to hassle with. Anyways, since I don’t touch coffee I was wondering if there are any other uses for these things. I know I could make cider and hot cocoa but do I need to buy K-cups to do so or can I just make a cup of hot water with the Keurig and stir in a packet of Swiss Miss or whatever? Can they be used for anything else? Do they produce enough hot water for a cup of ramen or a Soup on the Go?
I should add that it seems like a French Press/Kettle might be a decent alternative for cheaper, but the mess factor and having to keep fresh coffee grounds around the house is probably more of a hassle than a K-cup.
Sure. I think the max mine produced was 10 fl. oz. at one time. If you have one with the internal tank, you can get another 10 oz. out of it immediately.
One thing to keep in mind, and something I think a lot of people don’t know: if you’re changing flavors, or if you want to produce clear water, you should run a cup of plain water and discard it. That will clear the tubes of leftover flavors of whatever was made last.
simster, you can’t run it when the external reservoir gets too low. The blue “add water” light comes on. The internal reservoir is always full. Keurig flatly states it can’t be emptied. I guess there may be someone somewhere who has figured out how to do it, but I just gave mine to my folks instead of putting it in storage.
ThelmaLou, please tell me what this gadget is? I’ve been looking for a warm milk frother that isn’t too expensive, but can’t seem to find one. Thanks, medstar
That’s exactly what I have - I have two, a little bitty one and a larger one.
They’re not really for making regular coffee though - they’re espresso makers and do a very nice espresso.
I think I’ve been talked into a Keurig as well. Wal-Mart carries them now, so I’ll check what they have this weekend.
I got the CBTL milk heater and frother from Bed, Bath & Beyond. Not cheap, but worth it for the pure, heavenly bliss of it.
As far as the OP goes, I use an Aeropress coffee maker. I love the coffee it makes and like the ritual of making it, but it’s more work than the OP desires. My parents and brother both have Keurig coffee makers, and love them. There are more and easier to use gadgets for brewing with your own coffee in the Keurig now, too, so if you don’t like whatever is available prepacked in the K-cups, no problem.
I have a Keurig, and I’m pretty happy with it. I have a model with a removable reservoir and you can choose between 5 different cup sizes. I like my coffee strong, so I use Extra Bold cups and the smallest cup size,
