Recommend A Computer Speaker System

Or please tell me what you’re playing your WoW through?

I have a system but the bass on it really sucks. (It’s a 3 -piece)

Thanks

Quasi

This will blow you away.

Although personally I use this hooked to a pair of these plus a powered subwoofer like this.

I use a pair of Sennheiser HD600 headphones.
ETA: When I had more desk space I routed my audio through an old Linn Classik with a pair of small Mission speakers that I had on hand.

If you can find some Monsoon magnaplanars on e-bay, you can’t beat them. Best computer speakers ever. They have been out of business for years, though.

I’ve been using the Logitech z-5500 Digital 5.1s since they came out, and I hope to never have to buy another set of computer speakers. They are perfect in every way so far.

When complimented with the aforementioned HD600s from Sennheiser, you’ll be set for a long time…

I have the Klipsch 3-speaker set as well. Thumbs up! I can’t turn it up past 3 because I’m afraid it would bother the neighbors.

Guys,

I found the logitech at TigerDirect for 214.00, but I have a question:

Is it TRUE surround-sound, or just “double-stereo” or does it depend on the computer and the sound-card capabilities? And does WoW deliver that kind of signal?

Also, 500 watts???

Whoooeee!

That might not be a problem, 'cause I live in an apartment complex for the elderly, and most of my neighbors are very hard of hearing.

I know this because I was practicing my bass one night pretty late, and although no one complained about the volume, the next day my neighbor told me she thought we’d had an earthquake during the night because she could feel the vibrations.

I just nodded sagely, and said “Hmmmmm”.

So thanks for all the reccies!

Q

It is true surround and it is sublime

And yes, they get very loud. When I unpacked the 10" powered sub I almost ejaculated with geeky joy, but managed to restrain myself.

Until I turned them on.
Ill be in mah bunk.

Guess I’d better keep plenty of Kleenex close by then, huh STT:D?

Okay, gonna order one.
Thanks to all for your replies!

Quasi

Sweet!

Let me know what you think.

Will do!

Q

STT: Did you wind up running a lot of extra speaker wire?

Thanks

Q

Well, I built a pretty sweet computer room, and had the rear monitors run to the far back of the room, so yeah, I did. I also used a heavier gauge wire for it and threw away the pre-packaged crap.

But all that will be dependent on how you set yours up.

Logitech does make the same series of speaker that have wireless rear monitors, but I didn’t trust them to get it right with the first series, so I went wired. They have been out for awhile now, though, so if you’re interested in going wireless, it should be too hard to track down reviews.

I believe they were called the z-5550’s.

My wired speakers are already on order so looks like I’m gonna be tacking some wire around my room.

Can I ask what gauge wire you used and what the plugs are or is it just bare wire into one of those clip-holes?

Thanks!

Q

I used a 16 gauge insulated wire because 1: I ran it inside the walls, and 2: I had a ton of it laying around from a job I had just got finished doing for someone else. This was complete overkill though. I would have been fine with an 18 or 20, but then I would have had to gone out and buy the stuff.

Also, the speakers do have the standard red/black clip style receivers for the wire, so you dont need to worry about soldering or splicing.

Ps. Now I feel kind of bad about not mentioning the z-5550 wireless speakers. I thought of them at the time I posted, but I had read some poor reviews when they first came out so I didn’t bring them up. I can’t imagine how you could be disappointed once you hear the 5500’s though.

That’s just a shame. I’ve been using these for years, and LOVE 'em. I never wanted to mess with surround sound: the extra wires and finding a spot for those rear speakers seemed like a lot of hassle. One day I’ll probably switch anyway, but until then these are great.

Don’t feel bad, STT. I didn’t see the 5550’s listed on Tiger Direct or I would have chosen them instead. As it is I got this system:** Logitech Z-5500 THX Certified 5.1 505-watt Dolby Digital & DTS Hardware Decoding Speaker System**
For 219.00 after the 40 dollar rebate.

Also in one of the reviews I read that one guy was disappointed because the rear speakers were difficult to mount due to the fact that you cannot mount the bracket and then just slide the speaker into it. Did you find this to be the case?

Appreciate all your help!

Q

Well, the way I mounted them made it kind of easy. I wired it so the speakers mounted to the ceiling behind me, and then just screwed them to the ceiling (it was tongue and groove pine) through the mounting wholes on the feet. I did notice that they might be a pain if you were just going to wall mount them, but I wasn’t so I didn’t mind.
