You know those folding grocery/shopping carts you see little old ladies hauling around? Something like this?
I need one.
It has to be large enough to carry a few paper bags full of groceries, and sturdy enough to be pulled about five blocks with that load without falling apart after a few trips. That means no flimsy frame or wheels.
Tell me what’s working for you–or what I should avoid! Specific makers and/or venders are preferred (vs. something like “one with four wheels”), and links would be the best.
We just bought a cheap one from Walmart and it still works, and that’s over thirteen years later. We have abused it, taken it on the bus, dragged it down the street. I put groceries in it, laundry, even a puppy once. And it still works.
Mine has four wheels and is upright metal. My only problem is it doesn’t stand too well when folded, and has a tendency to slide/roll down until it clatters on the floor. Easily rectified, however, by putting something small in front of it.
Just find an old lady who has one. Then offer her $5.00 for it. She’ll say “no.” Then you say “Ought of my way you old bat.” Then push her out of the way and take her cart.
Of course this only will work if your father isn’t the president of a condo association and in the process of being impeached.
I have had a couple over the last few years and I can safely say that you should NOT get the one with the rotating wheels in the front. If the front 2 wheels don’t have an axle but instead rotate of their own accord walk away and find another. I have one of those now and it falls over every time it hits uneven ground if I am not hyper-vigilant about keeping it upright. The ones with the front axle take the bumps and cracks like a champ.
I bought a black version of this smart cart at a home and garden show last winter. It is working wonderfully for me - I go grocery shopping with it least once a week, going downhill a half an hour then dragging my groceries back up the hill. Well, rolling them up the hill.
Target has a large cart similar to the ones shown. It has to be bought online and I’ve forgotten how much it was-----I think somewhere around $40.00 but I could be way off.
Let me get out the measuring tape - it’s definitely a smaller cart, but it holds all the groceries I can lug up a hill.
Okay, 38" top to bottom height.
Base of bag is 9" X 15".
Bag itself is about 24" tall.
There’s a zippered pocket on the back that fits my wallet, sunglasses, and keys. The cart itself has a very smooth rolling action and is well-balanced - it moves very nicely when loaded up. It also has a rigid bottom at the bottom of the bag which flips up when cart is folded. I had one of those big wire granny carts before this one - this one is much nicer. Just having an enclosed bag is nice, so my yogurts don’t fall out the bottom.
Thanks for checking the measurements–that definitely sounds too small for me (i.e., would maybe carry the equivalent of what I can do now with a backpack and two hands, albeit more comfortably). I’m looking for something that will help me make bigger trips.
If it wasn’t such a bitch to get to you I’d probably just give you mine. Mine stands about 3 feet high - around my waist level, or a smidge higher - when I open it up.
