Recommend a portable video player

I watch my tv shows on my laptop. Let’s leave the method of acquisition as a matter of speculation for the reader.

Do you know the market for PVPs? I’d like something that doesn’t take file conversion like my iPod does. What a pain in the butt. I think that means it would play DiVX, XVID, MP4, mkv, H.264. HDMI out would be nice. Discussions of screen resolution might enter into it. Interface might enter into it, but I’m thinking of this more as a treadmill companion with minimal interfacing used. I don’t want to pay for wifi connectivity.

I’ve noticed the Cowon A3, as it seems to play everything and not cost that much.

I used to think like you do. But the latest version of Real Player is really good for file conversion. If that doesn’t float your boat though, the PSP plays Mp4 files and AVI. Oh, and those stupid proprietary movies.

As I understand it, .avi is some sort of wrapper that is unrelated to the actual encoding used for the video. I’m distrustful of “plays .avi files”.

Are you saying that Real Player doesn’t take hours to convert a couple 42 minute tv shows? Because my current converter does. I don’t know if I’m converting to way too good a resolution, or what.
