and I thought I’d mention Big Fat Quiz of the year, just because I’ve just seen the 2012 installment. Not a serious, but bloody brilliant!!!

The series my wife and I have enjoyed most are “The Wire” and “Men of a Certain Age.” (For the latter, only two seasons were created, sadly. Both are available now.)
“Mad Men” comes close. Also “Breaking Bad,” although we decided to stop watching it when it started getting a little too out there. We’ve also loved “Homeland” (just one season available now.)
ETA: We’re both around 40, if that helps.
I’ve been enjoying The X Files, and I watched most of it in first-run.
You’re going to get tired of hearing this, but I’ll go ahead and say it: The Wire.
I wasn’t crazy about the first episode either. In fact, it took me three attempts - several months apart - to get through it.
And now? If asked I would not hesitate to cite it as the finest television show ever aired.
Give it another go; you owe it to yourself.
mmm
I was hooked on House, MD!
I think the latest season of Justified is starting off pretty good. It’s an interesting show with plenty of sexual situations and violence and flawed characters. Pretty good dialogue too. And this season’s plot arcs are kinda hard to predict after 4 episodes. I like that.
“The 4400” was a great mini-series that got picked up as a full series for three more seasons. IMHO, only the mini-series and second season are worth watching.
Conversely, “Supernatural” doesn’t get good until the second season and is currently in its eighth.
Since you brought up Band of Brothers, I will assume miniseries are fair game? If so, then I suggest “Lonesome Dove.”
I agree 100%! There are several incarnations/sequels and the Tommy Lee Jones - Robert Duvall version is the best one. Saw it again not long ago and it holds up well.
Ahem. Of course it holds up well. It is only one of the best westerns of all time. But I would skip all of the follow-ups except maybe Commanche Moon.
This. Fantastic in every way.
I also loved The Hour.
Really? I found the first season okay, but couldn’t get past my dislike of the main character - a whiny little twerp in my opinion. Is season 2 any better?
Oh and I’m another +1 for The Wire.

Ugh. I absolutely love Idris Elba, but I greatly dislike Luther. I gave it a fair shot (about 5 episodes), but I found it derivative, cliched, melodramatic, and incredibly silly. For the most part, every single character was mentally ill, incredibly stupid, or, for the majority of them, both.
Second season was inferior, IMHO. If you didn’t like 1, then avoid 2.
ER. Some of the best television out there, at least for the first six seasons or so.
I’m not even sure about Commanche Moon. I’ve read all the LD novels and seen all the adaptations and I don’t believe that any of them come close to the brilliance of the original.
