I have recently purchased a new computer. Nothing super fancy, but modern enough that I should be able to handle some of the newer games. Therefore, I turn to you folks for some suggestions. Here are some of the games that I have enjoyed in the past, to sort of give you an idea of what I like.
Diablo and Diablo 2
Fallouts 1 and 2
The Sims (but probably not enough to buy The Sims 2)
Alpha Centauri
Civilization 2 (never played 1)
Sim City (though that got old after a while)
In general, I tend to go for RPG type games with turn based combat. Fallout, for me, represents the ideal. I wanted to like Arcanum, but just couldn’t get into it. First Person Shooters are out, as I just can’t deal with the interface.
Neverwinter Nights
Divine Divinity (kind of like a cross between Diablo and a real RPG).There’s also the sequel “Beyond Divinity”, but I haven’t had a chance to play it yet.
Civ3 is obvious but worth mentioning.
If you like Star Wars (and who doesn’t eh?), Knights of the Old Republic is an amazing game. It has RPG and adventure game elements.
I opened this thread to recommend this game. I’d caution against the sequel (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 - The Sith Lords), though - it’s fabulous for most of the game, then you start noticing dropped plot elements, and finally completely falls apart with a super-crappy generic ending.
I hate FPS games and love RPGs of the Baldur’s Gate/Planescape/Neverwinter Nights type - KotOR fits far more snugly into the RPG category, IMO, though admittedly you’ll be doing a good amount of fighting. There is a complex plot, character interactions, liberal pause button use allowed, etc.
In fact, I think 4 is closer to 2 than 3. Not sure though becuase I didn’t spend much time with 2.
From what I hear, and IME, 3 was a bit of a step back from 2. I know that the tech tree and combat were both simplified but I preferred it that way. With 4, the tech tree went back toward 2 levels and incorporated multiple paths so you’re not locked into 2+2=4; sometimes you can use 1+3. 4 is what 2 should have been.
I’m sure you’ll find more (and possibly better) info in the couple of recent Civ 4 theads.
