Recommend an AmE learner's dictionary

I’m teaching English to a family who are moving to the US. Usually when students ask for a dictionary recommendation I go with the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary. It has little explanations of grammar and usage added in, while it’s still a good general dictionary.

As they’re moving to US I’d rather recommend an AmE dictionary that is similar. I saw Merriam-Webster do an Advanced Learner’s dictionary. Can anyone tell me if it is any good? Is it similar to the Oxford one? Any other recommendations?

I’m trying really hard to remember to say “couch” and to consistently misspell colour. Man, AmE is hard! Yard yard yard, not garden! :stuck_out_tongue:
