recommend an auto repair class in Los Angeles?

I live in the mid-Wilshire area of Los Angeles and I’m looking to take an introductory auto repair class where I can learn how to do basic repair and maintenance on my own car. (A 93 Honda Accord if that’s relevant.)

I took a one day class through Los Angeles City College. It was ok, but aimed more at turning you into an intelligent consumer (i.e. how not to get ripped off by an auto repair shop) than a do-it-yourselfer.

I guess I’m looking for a class with multiple sessions that meets on weekends or evenings. I don’t mind driving a ways to get to a good class, but I’d prefer something close to my house if possible.

Any suggestions?

I took a good class at Pierce College last semester. It was called “Fundamentals of Auto Repair” and covered all the major systems. It met on Saturdays. We had lecture in the morning and in the afternoons we were able to do whatever work we wanted on our cars. The city college near you probably offers something similar.

Thanks for the response. I have heard about that class at Pierce College, and from what I could tell from website, and it looked pretty good. In fact it looked like the best class in the LA area, and I’m glad to hear you had a good experience with it.

It’s a little bit of a hike, but not that bad, and anyway traffic shouldn’t be too bad at 7:00 am on Saturday morning.

I really like idea that you get to work on your own car under “adult supervision.”
I think I’ll sign up for the summer session so I don’t have to give up all those saturdays during ski season.

You mean other than the classes I teach? :smiley:
LA City schools has some occupational centers that teach auto mechanics. There are two in the valley. North Valley in Granada Hills, and West Valley accross the street from Pierce College. They also have one down in the Harbor area. They may be others, but I am unaware of them. These centers teach auto mechanics from the ground up. Classes are offered in the evenings, as well as on Saturdays.
Rating These up against Pierce, I would put the Pierce program a little higher as their facility is only about 15 years old. I don’t know just how old the Occ centers are, but I think I saw a lunch bag at North Valley that said Henry Ford on it.
The most important thing is course content. See if you can speak the an instructor and gets his ideas.
