Recommend an online prescription eyeglass vendor

I just got an eye exam, and the prices of prescription sunglasses and lens replacements at the optometrist’s office were outrageous. What is a reliable online prescription eyeglass vendor? I am looking to buy prescription sunglasses, as well as prescription lens replacements for frames I already own.

Many people have told me they were very happy with Zenni Optical.

I have two young girls in glasses and we use $39 glasses. So far so good. I hated getting glasses at the optometrist. It was like dealing with car salesmen.

You’re going to have a harder time replacing lenses in frames you already have.

A place like Zenni is so cheap, more frames won’t matter. I’ve purchased many sets of frames/lenses from Zenni in the last 4-5 years. Some are better quality than others, but again, they’re such good prices it doesn’t matter, just get another pair. I’m not so cavalier about it since I got progressive lenses, those are running me about $100, but when I was getting single vision lenses? I bought 3-4 at a time in different colors to match outfits.

DO: pay close attention to the frames you currently have, get the numbers off them, measure the parts if needed. Zenni lists all the dimensions of the frames and the best way to make sure you’re finding frames that will fit your face is to start with dimensions from a pair you already have and you know look good. All your orders are saved, so you can use those for future reference on future frames. Using this guideline, I’ve been able to sift through and search by certain dimensions so I’m not looking at glasses that won’t fit in the first place.

When I told my optometrist I’m getting my progressives (lenses and frames) from Zenni for $100, he said that was under his cost for lenses alone.

I thought the frames from 39dollar felt a bit sturdier than those from Zenni though I’ve had no trouble from either.

If you need wrap-around style sunglasses for cycling or running, SportRx does a superb job. The RX is ground into the sunglass lens, no second lens behind the tinted. They also do eyewear for other sports such as skiing, motorcycling and such.

The cost is frames, filling the Rx runs 75-150 and then there’s tinting(free,I think), mirror coats or Transitions lenses.

The frames from Zenni did seem very thin. But for a second, spare pair of glasses they were fine.

I have a pair of RayBan Clubmaster frames I paid over $100 on Amazon for, so I would really like to keep them. I had lenses made at Sam’s Club Optical last time, so maybe I will have to go back there.

The sunglasses at 39DollarGlasses look good though.

Sam’s Club, or any other local optical shop, will probably be able to replace the lenses in the frames you own. But the mail order houses like Zenni probably cannot do that. How would it work anyhow? Would you send your frames to them? Or do you think they can cut lenses to fit frames they’ve never seen?

My wife orders them by the dozen from Zenni, she has frames to match every outfit. For myself, I’ve had nothing but good results from Zenni

Zenni can take 2-3 weeks to fill an order, so don’t order from them if you’re in a hurry.

Not a fan of Zenni. I (supposedly) bought the upgraded frames but they were very flimsy. And the progressive lenses were crappy. Very narrow fields of clear view. Total waste of money.

I’ve been happy with eyebuydirect. Make sure you know your pupillary distance.

Although they have gotten a touch more expensive lately I have used eyebuydirect for several years now for myself and my son. The glasses I got from Zenni a few years just looked and felt cheap. Eyebuydirect’s frames were (IMO) a bit higher quality overall. The frames are still reasonable although titanium frames have gone up and lenses now jump from a low priced baseline lens to $20-$50+ dollars for thinner lenses with coatings.

I usually buy when they have BOGO (buy one get one free) deals on frames about once a month or so (one ends tonight). I’m usually at $70-$110ish for a 2 pairs of men’s sleek, well constructed med to large all metal and metal half rim glasses with all tints and coatings. BOGO deals usually save me around $20-30. You can get glasses and sunglasses on eyebuydirect much cheaper than that of course but they will be generic looking plastic frames with uncoated lenses. Still around 50 a pair all in for glasses that would cost me $ 400 at an opticians is not a bad deal.

Wait times are about 10 days from ordering to delivery. Do opt for the $6 higher quality magnetic clasp case, it’s worth it

39dollarglasses.com provides this service. You have to send them your existing frames. I did this and they came out perfectly.

I’ve had good results with Warby Parker.
