recommend external speakers for computer

My current external speakers (120 VAC Bose with left/right channels and bass) have just died. After over ten years of service.

This is tragic, as I always have music on.

I would like right/left channels with separate bass. Treble, bass and volume controls.

Although price is a factor, I would consider anything. Music is a big part of my life.

Thank you for your replies.

Hello, these people have great monitor speakers some of which are suitable for desktop use. Much more hi-fi than computer speakers usually are. Not affiliated with them just a happy customer.

Oh well, I was going to heartily recommend my Emotiva 4s speakers, but they appear to have been discontinued. Emotiva still has an array of speakers on their website, but not these inexpensive little gems. Audioengine is another company that comes up when looking for these types of speakers. Then there are the usual JBL, KRK, etc.

Actually the Audioengine A2 looks interesting - they have a built-in DAC so you can simply run a usb directly from your computer to the speakers.

Thanks

These are really neat and work well; I have the 5.1 version. Which, by the way, can do 2.1 or 5.1 with the flip of a switch.

It’s not personal. We get a lot of trolls and spammers here who are one-and-done. Clicking on a link from a new poster is quite likely to take one to an internet betting site or to net us a dandy virus, so we let the mods check it out. Stick around, you’ll like us. . .eventually.

I’m no audiophile, but I have the Audioengine A2+ and like it a lot. To me, it sounds much better than my old Bose Companion 3.

It’s not USB-powered though, if that’s what you’re thinking? You need to connect the AC adapter in addition to the USB cable to your computer.

Also this doesn’t fit the OP’s requirement for a 2.1-channel setup (separate subwoofer). Personally I find it has plenty of bass, but definitely not as much as the Bose.

Oh, I don’t know what I’d recommend. I plug my computer into a 1978 Sansui G5700 amp running Alesis studio monitors. The sound is perfectly balanced, crystal clear, and will go loud enough to cause vision distortion. I recommend the setup, but where ya gonna find that G5700?

No, I was just referring to the signal from the computer.

I saw that, but I think a set of full range (for the most part) monitors is a reasonable alternative to a 2.1 system. I replaced a Klipsch Promedia 2.1 system with the Emotivas and don’t miss the sub at all. My setup is in a small room and I don’t like tons of bass, so my needs may be different.

OK, seriously. I need new external speakers for laptop, and Id like tolerable sound from YouTube videos. SO . . .

On the little sticker under the speakers, with numbers on it, you know? Which numbers are relevant to how good the speakers will sound? What other words in the blurb on the box are relevant? Talking maybe 20 bucks or so.

If you have blue tooth and would like wireless, check out Aukey. They are awesome! Deliver great sound, and it’s a breeze to just take into the next room with you. They play the music off my device, no matter where it is in my house. I just purchased a second one for upstairs. Brilliant!

I’m looking for some office speakers too. Right now I have my eye on these Peachtree M25s, but man it’s hard to think about spending that much without hearing them first. And of course I want the bamboo for the extra $50.

First, thanks to all the replies. I have been doing research on your replies.

Was watching a Netflix flick, and wasn’t happy with the volume. Well, I have another portable speaker, and I hooked it up. No sound either.

Called Applecare. They guided me through fixers. We got them working.

Good news, I don’t have to buy speakers!

Thanks again, all.

I heavily endorse this brand as well. I have a pair of M-Audio speakers/monitors and I’m very happy with them. They sound fantastic. I have the AV40 model, which is replaced by the AV42, I guess.

M-Audio has solid products. It’s not a bullshit fake company.

I just ordered a set of Logitech Z120. Only $12.50 including shipping. I hope they’re comparable to the S120, which was very nice.

Glad you got your speakers working again; would have sucked to buy another set and not fix the problem.
I’m very happy with my Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers. They don’t have seperate bass/treble controls, but that can be controlled with a software based equalizer, if you want. The sub is quite powerful, I have mine set almost as low as it goes and it still puts out plenty of bass.

My Logitech Z120s arrived, and I’m quite pleased with the sound quality of them. Here in the Philippines, they’re only $12,50, shipped, from Lazada, but at Amazon they are $38 plus shipping in US, and I think at that price Id have been a bit disappointed. I have to turn the volumes up higher than my previous speakers, but that’s OK, I will never run them wide open in any case.

One thing concerns me – they are not fabric-covered, they have an exposed cone, and if I touch gently, the sound significantly muffles. Will they, over time, accumulate sticky atmospheric dust and become muffled from that? Am I supposed to clean them? With what?
