I’m looking to set up a backup solution that’s totally hands-off for a small office. I bought a Maxtor OneTouch III external HD and it’s nifty, however the bundled software doesn’t seem to support backups across a network. The office has 2 PCs and one Mac and I want to buy the best software solution which will backup specified files and folders for all the computers on the network to the one external HD.
I’m pretty sure this is a simple thing but I need a good third party software package that’ll do the legwork and automate the process. Anyone have experience using the options available?
I use Dantz Retrospect for my home computer (no network). I’m happy with it. Very easy to set up which folders to backup and scheduling. I suspect that’s what came with your Maxtor, though.
No, actually the newest Maxtor’s don’t come with it. They use some barebones proprietary solution. Older (and some of the highest end) Maxtors do still include it apparently, but the versions available at Staples right now don’t.
Retrospect was what’s recommended in the HDs user guide for this action but I’m curious if better, cheaper or more reliable option exist.
