Recommend me a couple of good serious flicks to watch this weekend

I don’t necessarily want to cry. And no romances, please. I hate most romance movies.

I just want a couple of serious, thought-provoking movies to watch. Not just for this weekend, but long-term. I’m open to all kinds of suggestions barring romantic flicks (which I don’t think are very deep anyway!) so fire away.

Thanks!

Have you seen Hotel Rwanda yet? Quite thought-prevoking, that one.
Also, in no particular order:

House of Sand and Fog.
Motorcycle Diaries
Vera Drake

Taxi Driver
Midnight Cowboy
Silence of the Lambs
Apocalypse Now
The Godfather

When come back, bring Pi.

Blade Runner
Hang 'em High
Near Dark
Silverado
The Incredibles
License to Kill
Hook

What? She said all types of movies, and those are my favorites…

A super list! Marry me! (Wait a minute - are you a guy? Not that there’s anything wrong with it).

But don’t forget the director’s cut of Once Upon a Time in America.

We watched A Face in the Crowd the other day. Excellent movie, with a wonderful performance by Patricia Neal.

Serious?
My all-time favorite a Man for All Seasons. still great.

My second all-time favorite the Seven Samurai.
Equus
Spartacus – the restored version, if possible.

L.A. Confidential
Chinatown
Angel Heart
Dark City

Cool, I’ll find what I can this weekend and work my way through this list. You’re welcome to post opinions on each others’ picks, too!
Keep 'em coming!

I recently watched Lawrence of Arabia for the umpteenth time. Wow, what a movie. Thought-prokoking, great soundtrack, full of action… featuring the totally droolworthy Peter O’Toole at his best, and the equally droolworthy Omar Sharif in his English-language film debut. Even if you’ve seen it before, I bet you’d enjoy seeing it again.

I think I need to own Lawrence of Arabia. For the slash possibilities alone it would be worth it.

I just saw Crash last week and enjoyed it a lot. Actually, it did make me cry, but that’s probably not terribly hard to do.

Yeah, Lawrence of Arabia is one to own.

Here’s 10 of my favourites…

Aguirre: Wrath of God
Bliss
Fresh
Last Night
M
Matewan
Once Were Warriors
The Spy Who Came In From The Cold
The Stunt Man
Treasure of the Sierra Madre

Ooh, I second A Man for All Seasons… that is so good.

I recently watched HBO’s production of Angels in America, which I read back in high school, and it was excellent.
