I don’t really want to see Trainspotting, unless the Teeming Millions deem it particularly worthy. A cow-orker recommended The Pillow Book for the nakedidity in it.
It’s one of the most important British movies made in the last few decades. It’s the movie that really made him. It’s a must see if you are a Ewan fan.
If you’re American you may need to turn the subtitles on though
Well, after “Brassed Off” and “Little Voice,” I’d suggest A Life Less Ordinary, which got him the part in Moulin Rouge (i.e., he was asked to sing and they discovered he had a good voice).
Just wanted to second the Trainspotting & Life Less Ordinary recommendations. I have to admit bias because the book (Trainspotting) is one of my favorites, the movie really captures the great dialogue of the book. Yes, the subject matter is a bit depressing (ok… parts are REALLY degrading) but it still is worth watching IMHO. I prefer the Ewan in Trainspotting more than any other character he played- he down plays his charm quite a bit and seems like a real person. Life Less Ordinary is a good comedy, its Ewan at his (IMHO) most charming but also without as much of the cheese as you get in *Moulin Rouge. * . The karoke scene alone is worth watching the movie. LIttle Voice was also interesting and so was Brassed Off! .
He is indeed naked in a big way (well, a medium-sized way) in The Pillow Book, but I have to say the movie sucked ass, and not in a good way. (And don’t tell me I didn’t understand it, I understood it just fine and was still bored to tears.) There’s about 20 minutes of interesting movie in it, but of course the movie’s a lot longer than 20 minutes.
I’d highly recommend Lipstick on Your Collar, which is a British television miniseries, not a movie, but it’s fantastically well done and absolutely hilarious. And it has some of my favorite British character actors in it. MacGregor plays sort of the second lead, the lead being the hilarious Giles Thomas. MacGregor’s not naked in this one, but there’s plenty of tasty female nudity, if you’re into that.
Basically it’s about a naive Welsh lad in the 1950s who has been assigned for his national service duty to an intelligence unit which basically does little but translate Russian newspaper articles and engage in all kinds of bureaucratic nonsense. He’s sexually obsessed with the hot little number who lives above his aunt and uncle’s place and who is married to his cruel corporal. Meanwhile, the Suez Canal Crisis is going on and the old fogeys in the department are completely losing their marbles over the great British Empire’s having to back down.
And there are plenty of 1950s pop tunes with fantasy dance sequences joined in by all the old fogeys.
Yup definatly have to say Trainspotting for sheer brilliance (liked it so much I read the book, and the sequel, Porno…and if you think the moive needs subtitles :D) and Velvet Goldmine for the nekkidness.
I’ve also heard good things about Young Adam but I haven’t seen it playing anywhere yet (maybe it’s already on DVD?)
If you’re surfing the pay channels for “Trainspotting”, be sure to check for it on HBO Comedy. The withdrawal scene with the baby crawling on the ceiling is “A Laugh Riot!” says NBC’s Gene Shalit.
It’s EM’s must-see movie. Also the first major role for Kelly McDonald (“Gosford Park”, “Entropy”).
