Terence Blanchard has a hand in the background music in the Spike Lee films Maclolm X and Mo’ Better Blues (both of which I love). Its quite similar in each. I’m thinking of certain parts of each movie where you have a simple, slow tune played by a solo trumpet (often muted) or saxophone, accompanied by a big backing of strings or brass or both but without drums/any kind of percussion. Its kind of sad-sounding and its slow enough that the beat is kind of loose, especially with the absence of drums.
What are some jazz albums with this style?
