Recommend Some Jazz

In the vein of the opening theme of the film Chinatown, other than the soundtrack of course.

Thanks.

Miles Davis: Kind of Blue

Just try to listen to this and not feel cool.

If you use Pandora, set up a Miles Davis station and take note of what other artists you like. It’s a great way to explore new music.

I believe that is simply called the Love Theme from Chinatown.

Sounds like a classic jazz ballad with a lead trumpet or cornet. The first artist it made me think of, in terms of classic jazz ballads, is tenor sax master Ben Webster - try his CD King of the Tenors: Ben Webster - King Of The Tenors - Amazon.com Music

Listen to the samples on that page and you should hear a similar feel. I like the idea of using Pandora or a similar service, but set it up for Ben Webster or Dexter Gordon, another great ballad-playing sax man…

You might also try Chet Baker for jazz trumpet ballads. He was also a singer of note.

He may stretch your boundaries for “jazz” a bit, but the tune in the title and its rendering made me think immediately of Chris Botti who plays a nice horn.

You can never go too far wrong with anything Miles Davis has done , but the mention of Kind of Blue deserves a “Hell, yes!” And a big +1 for Chet.

While you’re checking out horns, look in on Clifford Brown and Freddie Hubbard.

Yes. And give Jon Faddis a listen, too. The list of good trumpet people doesn’t even slow down until you get to 20. Some of the greats have moved on, but their recordings are timeless.

How are you for piano or guitar?

If you’re asking me, I say Monk for piano, but he’s not for everyone. Oscar Peterson or Art Tatum are probably more accessible. Kinda grown bored with jazz guitar; I just prefer it for blues or rock or folk or pretty much any other genre.

For the OP, give Naima a listen; it’s Coltrane at his most soulful.

I bet you’d like Haunted Heart by Charlie Haden.
