I want some new tunes! I am bored with the mainstream radio droll and top 40 sludge.
In the past few days I have discovered Rilo Kiley and The Shins, and I like most of what I have heard. I would love to get some Doper-approved recommendations for more additions to my music library. I’m open to anything!
but, please, no Country, and no Metal. Nothing common like U2, Tom Petty, Green Day, etc, Cause I probably already have it.
Some gypsy punk is always cool: Gogol Bordello
Personally, I think TV on the Radio is fantastic, too. They’re very new sounding. Gomez is a bit better known, but doesn’t get nearly the credit they deserve, I think.
Finally, Andrew Bird is simply marvelous.
Great to get a chance to share music. I’m excited to see other dopers’ replies.
Get yourself on Google and check out The Liberation Dance Party at DC9 in Washington DC. They record their entire 4+ hour djset on their website as an MP3 - it’s a great way of finding out what is hot and upcoming on the indie/electric/dancepunk scene
I’m not sure how common these are, because I don’t listen to the radio anymore, but I’ve never heard any of them in TV commercials. It kind of depends on the age of the listener, I guess.
Arctic Monkeys
The Black Keys
Black Angels
Heartless Bastards
Firewater
Gogol Bordello
Interpol
Morphine
The Phenomenauts
Stellastarr
The Tragically Hip (common in Canada)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Some bands that I know have been on the radio, but are still uncommon enough that you may have missed them.
Helmet
The Hives
The Jesus and Mary Chain
Joy Division (and New Order)
Primus (and its side bands Sausage and Les Claypool & the Holy Mackerel)
The Smiths (and Morrissey, but the Smiths is better)
Soul Coughing
The Strokes
I love The Shins even though they didn’t change my life. I would recommend Trashcan Sinatras - nice Scottish guitar band, that I recently introduced to some scots at work and Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros. Their second and last album Streetcore is the better of the two but Johnny Appleseed off the first album is my favourite song of all time (as of this date…check back in a week or 2 for updates).
If you don’t know them already, check out pandora.com and last.fm. You type in a band, it plays similar music. I prefer last.fm, but that’s probably because pandora doesn’t work outside the US. Wankers.

Great suggestions so far, thanks Everyone!
I have heard Gomez before, but I found some songs that I didn’t realize they did.
Andrew Bird is on my to-get list.
I Downloaded some stuff from the Strokes and the White Stripes (Furious_Marmot, I swear I saw the White Stripes in your list, I don’t know how they popped into my head)
You might check out Brad Sucks – http://www.bradsucks.net . its rock, with a little electornic additions. The about the album on his site is neat – “Fan-funded and professionally manufactured – thanks to everyone who helped make this album possible!”
If you are on the hunt for new music, check out these two sites:
Jamendo.com – completely free for personal use music. Free download, free burning, streaming online.
Magnatune.com – independnt label that allows streaming of full albums over the internet. 50% of all sales go directly to the artist. You decide the price for an album $5 - $18. When you buy, you get the right to distribute a copy or two of each album to friends.
Sorry for the whoring of the two sites. I’ve no connection other than a satisfied user
OH!! Just thought of another one. One of my absolute faves: Steven Burns. Yes, that Steven Burns. His album is nothing like watching Blue’s Clues, I promise.
I second WBER. At least when I was listening to it online (2002-2005) it was my major source of new music. A good mixture of semi-popular alternative and somewhat more obscure stuff, depending on the particular DJ of course.
ETA I don’t listen to it anymore because I’ve always only had dialup at home and my new work place doesn’t allow streaming.
If you like Rilo Kiley, you may want to look into some of Jenny Lewis’ solo material as well.
Also, you’d probably find most artists on the Arts and Crafts label to be right up your alley. My personal faves in their roster are Stars and The Most Serene Republic.
Oh, and you MUST look up The Decemberists if you’ve enjoyed The Shins so far. Trust me on this one.
