Recommend me some (no too) horror movies

I’ve never watched a lot of horror movies. There is too much bad stuff out there to chance my movie watching time on. That said, I have seen some good ones.
Hide and Seek, Cabin in the Woods, etc.

Lately I’ve been in the mood for trying horror again so last night I tried Stephen King’s IT. I did not like it. To silly for me. I’m looking for a more refined terror - and not so much slasher stuff.

Another one I liked was Stir of Echoes. Anyone got any suggestions along the lines of the ones I mentioned? Thanks.

I liked It Follows and think you would too.

“Shaun of the Dead.” Scary, gross, very funny/very British.

“The Mist.” Deliberate homage to '50s horror films. Stephen King filtered through Frank “Shawshank Redemption” Darabont. The B&W version is fun.

Night of The Creeps

Is The Mist the one where folks are hanging out in a grocery store? If so I second it - very good!

That’s the one - fun with monsters, plus a creepy sub-level of fundamentalist screwballery unease. Marcia Gay Harden is frighteningly good.

Yep - REALLY good!

Near Dark

Wow, has it really been thirty years?

*The Thing, Chronos, Let the Right One In, * and seconding It Follows.

That version of It was made for TV and not really faithful to the book. We’ll see 9-9 if the film does a better job.

The Haunting sixties version
Burn Witch Burn 1962
Carrie 1976
Fright Night 1985
Pumpkinhead 1988
Rpsemarys Baby 1968
The Other 1972
The Shout 1978
The Taking of Deborah Logan 2014

I am not a huge horror fan myself but there are a few that I have watched and enjoyed:

The Prophecy - Christopher Walken is the Archangel Gabriel and he’s after an evil soul.

Tusk - When Kevin Smith decides to do a Canadian horror movie, you know it’s going to be some weird shit! The movie does drag a bit but my favorite part is where the villian is explaining his history. You realize that this is what a real-life Batman would be like. He’d be utterly psychotic. You may not like this movie but you sure won’t forget it.

Get Out - not really horror per se, more psychological horror than anything else. I don’t want to even try to describe the plot for fear of spoilers. Very little blood and guts, very great cast and concept.

Descent and 30 Days of Night come to mind.

*Troll II

The Frighteners

Zombieland*

All qualify as horror movies, technically, but they’re all hilarious.

Seconding Zombieland. Nicely skewed zombie apocalypse flick.

The Babadook
The Autopsy of Jane Doe
Split
Case 39
What Lies Beneath
Fragile
Flatliners

Tusk is absolutely demented. A splendid time is guaranteed for all. KS’s Red State was a gripping (sorta) horror flick.

Thirding Zombieland; when you can make me enjoy Woody Harrelson AND Jesse Eisenberg, you’ve accomplished something.

Cabin in the Woodsis a must see.

Maybe Angel Heart qualifies as horror. There is a bit of gore, but that’s not the scary part.

One review referred to it as “a haunting, elegant nightmare”. I would say that’s about right.

Frailty is great. Bill Paxton, Matthew McConaughey.

I loved IT, my love of the novel my bias me though. Anyway, our tastes my differ. The original Halloween was a masterpiece and tame by today’s standards of horror. Also, Ghost Story from the 80’s, starring Fred Astaire was excellent as I recall.
