Recommend some good Polish literature

A friend of mine will be living in Warsaw this summer while she works at the American embassy, and I’d like to get her a work of Polish literature that she’d enjoy reading, particularly one that takes place in Warsaw. The only books about Poland I can think of deal with the Warsaw Ghetto or the Holocaust, but I think she’ll get enough info about that crammed down her throat during her time there… so do any of you have suggestions about books from pre- or post-war Poland?

Thanks,

Henryk Sienkiewicz is a historical novelist whose great trilogy (WITH FIRE AND SWORD/THE DELUGE/PAN MICHAEL) takes place in Poland during the 17th century. He is also the author of QUO VADIS?, which takes place in ancient Rome and is the basis for the M-G-M film.
