Greetings, gentledopers. I recently managed to get my grubby little hands on a new Sony Clié, and I’m looking for some new software for it. I checked out tucows and some sites I found via Google, but the results were a bit daunting (there’s a lot of stuff out there). I’m hoping my fellow dopers can recommend some stuff and help me narrow the search a bit.
Specifically, I’m looking for recommendations about the following:
Calculators. A four-function calculator just ain’t gonna cut it for me. I’d like a good scientific calculator. A programmable one would be nice, but not essential; I have an HP48 for that.
Note-taking software. Is there something like the Memo Pad program that would allow me to take graphical notes? I guess I’m thinking of a cross between the Memo Pad and a simple paint program…
Games. I suspect I’ll be getting the Palm OS ports of “Lemmings” and “Archon” in the near future (although if I get “Lemmings” I may never be able to pry the PDA out of my wife’s hands again
), but what else? Are there any really good RPG’s I just have to get?
Thanks!
Brief placement note so I can find this thread later: I’ve got a M505, and my favorite game on it is “Galax”. Which is Galaga. Rocks. Sound’s even almost right.
Most used: Documents To Go. Word and Excel… very good for D&D and 40k. Powerpoint viewer is good for a Boss Screen.
Mobipocket Reader. Some die rollers… about it.
You bet. Check out DiddleBug. It should be just what you are looking for. You can take notes by writing on the screen and even set alarms for each note. I use this one a lot. It’s great for jotting down phone numbers quickly without having to go to the address book/phone app. Plus it’s free, so you can’t beat the price.
Another recommendation, if you get no other freeware program, make sure get Handyshopper. Hands down one of the best apps out there for the Palm.
My most used programs:
Avantgo lets you read webpages on your palm.
Palm Reader lets you read e-books. I use this one mainly because of the auto-scroll feature.
MegaCalc is a fairly decent calculator program
LauncherX is a replacement for the standard palm Launcher and is simply a must-have. Completely changes the way you use your palm. There are othe launchers out there but I havent had the time to evaluate them yet.
Noah is a fairly decent dictionary program.
There is a lemmings port although the UI is a bit cluttered for the palm.
What’s the one that lets you put a map of the local city on your palm? Vindigo? If you live near a big one, it’s handy.
What’s the good side of LauncherX, Shalmanese?
Hmm… I dont have any mapping software since Nobody has yet published maps of any Australian cities AFAIK.
Launcher X:
Instead of the different categories being in a menu, there tabbed at the top of the screen meaning you can jump from 1 to the next in one tap. Moving things from tab to tab is just drag n drop so its far more convenient organisation wise.
It shows the time, date, battery status and memory status at the top of the screen and up to 7 customisable toolbar buttons at the bottom.
It can read apps directly off the memory card and shows e-books and hacks as icons.
It seems a lot less sluggish than the palm launcher.
Its in pretty colours
But you really need to try it for a while to see.
First of all, for all things CLIE, check out Cliesource.
If you want an HP48 emulator on your CLIE, you can’t do better than Power48. And it’s FREE! If you can’t download from that site due to traffic, I can send you my (OS5) copy.
Another scientific RPN calulator is MathU, which looks like the HP11/HP15, but is not free. MathU Pro is its programmable big brother.
Bottle of Smoke: Yeah, DiddleBug looks about right. Although I can’t help but wonder about a program that comes with “IntelliBooger™ extensions”.
I’ll check out HandyShopper too.
E-Sabbath: Princeton is emphatically not a big city. But I will be in Toronto in the summer…hmm…
Shalmanese: I completely forgot about e-book readers until you mentioned it. Also, MegaCalc looks pretty good; it’s RPN at any rate, which never hurts.
Earthling:Oooh, I hadn’t found that Cliesource site yet…thanks! Regarding the HP48 emulator: may I simply say, holy crap! Sadly I can’t run that yet: I don’t have any memory sticks. (Definitely gonna have to price those out…) And I’m not sure my Clie really has the moxie for that anyway. It only has 15MB of internal memory; using 8MB for a calculator program would be a bit much. (Even if it is an insanely cool and powerful calculator program…)
I like Mobipocket for my e-book reader… it’s also fully compatable with the Baen Free Library. www.baen.com
Although it’s shareware, popcap.com has its fair share of addictive games, most notably bejeweled.
