That’s pretty much a universal truth when seeking ethnic food of any ethnicity. The fewer signs in the store in English, and the worse the proprietor’s English, the better the stuff you’ll find in there.
Bufalo brand hot sauces from Mexico, they’re hot as blazes and have a good flavor of their own.
I think their chipotle is fantastic.
Valentina’s good, I just bought some the other night. Indeed, most Mexican hot sauces are well worth a try. Sriracha brand is pretty good too, it has a garlicky sweetness to it that non-Asian hot sauces tend to lack.
I’d like to take this opportunity to express my fondness for Gentleman’s Relish.
It’s absolutely DELICIOUS spread on hot buttered toast, and although I haven’t experimented with it much beyond that, I imagine you could stir a little bit of it into almost any recipe that calls for Worcestershire cause and get a much richer salty-fishy-umami flavor booster.
I’ve NEVER seen it in a grocery store and get it from Amazon, but it’s one of the few grocery imports I’ve tried that I’ve been completely pleased with.
Hmm, I may have to try it, since on occasion I enjoy a shot of worcestershire sauce. Thanks for the info!
You can find it on Amazon for about $10-15 for a 1.5 oz container. That might sound small, but much like Vegemite, a little bit of the stuff goes a long way.
The same company also makes salmon and mackerel based versions (Poacher’s Relish and Angler’s Relish respectively), but I haven’t tried either of those.
lol, I have a 2.5 kg tub of vegemite in my pantry, it’s about 1/3 empty after 9 months of use.
But I expect I’ll take it slower with anchovy based treats. ;-D
