Okay, I’m getting really serious about learning Spanish. Something that should help is to get some spanish language movies to watch and listen to the dialoge.
I saw both “Amores Perros” and “Y tu Mama Tambien” in theaters and they’re both already on the list. I never saw “Abre Los Ojos,” but everyone says it’s good, so that’s on the list. There was another that I thought of this morning but it’s already slipped my mind.
So, any other recommendations? I’m in the US, so anything that’s not available here or in the right format is no good.
I’m also a heterosexual male, so having some sexy latinas in it will help keep my motivated…
Luis Bunuel is one of film’s greatest directors and many of his films are in Spanish (others are in French). I’d suggest El (fascination story of sexual obsession) and Simón del desierto.
El Ángel exterminador (The Exterminating Angel) and Viridiana are also supposed to be quite good, but I haven’t been lucky enough to see them.
If you want a great, sexy Spanish language comedy, there’s alwas Belle Epoque
Just about everýthing from almodovar, especially his early stuff.
A lot of interesting stuff from Mexico, tambien: Amores Perros and Y tu mama, tambien.
How about ‘Abre los ojos’ which was remade as Vanilla Sky?
That should keep you busy for a while.
(The hamsters seem to be on their coffee break, and I don’t have the energy to code the links to IMDb manually.)
A few people mentioned movies by Almodovar. I’ve generally avoided his movies as they seem like “chick flicks” to me. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Maybe tell me which is the least “chick-flicky” and I’ll check it out.
The other movie I had been thinking of but forgot is “Men with Guns.” Not Sayles’ best, but still better than a lot of movies out there.
Quite possibly the strangest movie I’ve ever seen: Un Señor muy viejo con unas alas enormes (A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings). It’s bad but watchable, if only to see what the hell is going to happen next.
I found Santitos to be tedious as a movie, the book not so much.
For a Big Chill-type comedy you might like Solo Con Tu Pareja (Love in the Time of Hysteria). For a twisted suspense film see Profundo Carmesi (Deep Crimson). For a lesson in albures see O.K. Mister Pancho or any Alfonso Zayas movie.
And see any movies you can with Pedro Infante, Jorge Negrete or Santo.
I thought this was the best movie of last year, but be warned it’s very sexually explicit — not quite porn, but just up to the line — so you don’t want to watch it with your mother. It’s a wonderful, wonderful movie, though.
