i’m not sure if this should go in “Cafe Society”, but since I’m asking for opinions, I thought it should go here instead. Mods - please feel free to move it if I’m wrong.
Anyway, I’m a fan of trance music. I like anything mellow, chilled-out, and relaxing that has a good beat to it. Basicaly anything that i can drift off to. So far, my favorite artists are Chicane and BT, and in particular the albums Behind the Sun and ESCM respectively.
So bearing this in mind, what other artists do you think are quite similar ? Who do you think I’d like, and who would you recommend?
WOW! Another Chicane and BT fan! Judging from the looks I’ve gotten, I thought I was alone. I highly recommend Chicane’s first album, Far From the Maddening Crowds. Track 9, Sunstroke, is AWESOME!
Others that I listen to:
Paul Oakenfold
Paul van Dyk
Boards of Canada (not necessarily trance, but the album Twoism is fantastic)
Ian van Dahl
Lasgo
IIO
Leftfield
Orbital (Orbital and Orbital2)
Mandalay (Solace … again, not pure trance, but very chilled)
I could continue, but my recommendation is to try out some dance/trance compilations, and particularly the Served Chilled and Winter Chill series of CDs. They are “chill out” compilations with some great selections.
I just recently got a CD from a band called Antimatter*. The CD is called Savior. Kinda dark stuff, but great trance music. Do yourself a favor and check 'em out.
Also, if you like middle eastern sounds at all, the soundtrack for Suleyman the Magnificent is gorgeous. I love Omar Faruk Tekbilek (just hoping I spelled his name right) and Briane Keane. They’ve got multiple recordings out.
Or rather than listen to trance, you could just stick a power drill in your ear, it’ll be less painful. Okay, sorry, the techno snob in me comes out on occassion. I really don’t like trance, but if you must listen to it, Try John Digweed.
Start off with Dubnobasswithyourheadman, and then go on chronologically. I hate musical simileys, but these guys are the pink floyd of the trance field.
Others:
Juno Reactor - Beyond the Infinate and Bible of Dreams. really wordly stuff, and quite amazing.
Someone said Orbital, yes yes… great stuff. Brown album and In-Sides.
and that’s mostly it that I listen too, I have a few others (Fluke : Risotto)… but they’re not quite the same the holy trinity mentioned above.
also, you should check out the DJ albums by Sasha and Digweed.
yep! I’ll have to agree on Sasha, Underworld, and Digweed, though my experience with their stuff is limited. Also, try Blank and Jones.
If you like Chicane, try looking for Disco Citizens stuff. This is the name he (Nick Bracegirdle, the guy behind Chicane) went under early on, and you still find a remix or two by Disco Citizens. My favorite is Nagasaki Badger.
I highly recommend trancecontrol… check them out here- http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/0/trance_control.html - beginning of the end and Perfecto are their two best tracks, IMHO, but there are a couple of others… “The Long Way Home” by Faithless is a great track, and Oakenfold’s Tranceport album (a few years old now) is brilliant.
And, if you can still find their stuff, Members of Mayday did some good work. PPK are also pretty good- you’ve probably heard Resurrection on the radio.
