recommend TV programs

it seems all of the TV shows I rather enjoyed seem to have either been cancelled or have just gotten crappy. I miss Joan of Arcadia, Buffy and Firefly, I miss ER from when I cared about any of the characters, I miss Desperate Housewives for the same reason. I really like Greys Anatomy and Boston Legal. I have heard Lost was good but after missing the a season and a half will it still be worth watching? I enjoyed last nights “Book of Daniel”. So what I am looking for is week-night TV worth watching. that have amusing moments mixed with the serious and interesting stories. I don’t have cable so it would need to be regular network stuff.

Since you’ve already mentioned “Boston Legal”, I can recommend “Numb3rs” (CBS Fridays). Good characters, amusing moments, and very well written. “NCIS” (CBS Tuesdys) also comes to mind.

I don’t watch it religiously, but when I’ve seen it I enjoy House, M.D.

On network TV:

Family Guy
The Simpsons
Grey’s Anatomy
Lost (you can watch Season 1 on DVD)

On basic cable:

The Shield (previous seasons on DVD)
The Closer

On HBO:

The Wire
Deadwood (these two are on DVD and will have new seasons this year)
The Sopranos (worth catching up on in preparation for the coming season)
Rome (no new season until 2007, so you can easily catch up)

On Showtime:

The L Word
Huff

Yeah, I watch too much TV, but there really is some good stuff out there right now, especially on HBO. The Wire and Deadwood are two of the best shows I have ever watched, ever. Truly superb.

My Name is Earl
Lost
Monk
Dirty Jobs
The Colbert Report
The Daily Show
Medium
Emily’s Reasons Why Not
Craig Ferguson

Based on the shows you’ve mentioned, I’d suggest Veronica Mars and Numb3rs.

VM is witty and has great storylines. Numb3rs is something you can catch up with at any time (not true of VM) and has characters you can care about. Buuuut, I guess it conflicts with Daniel. Drat. Okay, Cold Case. It’s a better show than Numb3rs, but it’s often extremely sad and the characters aren’t necessarily a major focus of each episode.

I like:

Arrested Development (four more episodes in season 3, then possible cancellation)
Scrubs (just started season 6, I believe)
The Office
My Name Is Earl
Veronica Mars (watched the first season on DVD and loved it; haven’t seen the second yet)
The Shield (just started season 5)
24 (starting season 5 tomorrow night; Sunday 1/15)

You might like Close to Home on CBS on Friday nights.

Nearly everything on PBS, except “History Detectives”. Especially “Nova”, “American Experience”, “Frontline” and most times “Masterpiece Theater”. Of course, with “Masterpiece” you are almost guarenteed to somehow miss at least one or more of multi-part show. How the hell does that work? Parts One thru Four like clockwork on a certain night/time. Part Five? Your guess is as good as mine. Random!

“Daily Show” and “Colbert Report” on Comedy Central. But always do the reruns, so as to not conflict with good stuff on PBS.
