Recommendations for a Father-Daughter Kick-Ass Dance

Just to cut to the chase, our daughter may be getting married this year. With all the give-and-take, we have come to a sort-of meeting of the minds about: We do NOT want to do the usual, syrupy father-daughter dance to something like “Butterfly Kisses” or whatever.

We would like to do something like a choreographed HOT dance that is gonna be something to remember. Problem is, I don’t really think this is feasible.

But if it is, we’d like to do it.

So what I am asking is–is there any dance where we could both learn it separately, then maybe spend a week together “melding” said dance into a kick-ass routine?

She is very busy and is 600 miles away from our home. I am very busy, going month to month all over the USA. We could, just maybe, spend time over the months, a few hours a week, learning a dance. But we could not practice together until near the end.

I know the Tango is absolutely out. Kinda think it would be too hot for dad and daughter anyway, if we were to do it justice, even if we had a solid couple of years to work on it. But what about the Rhumba, or Mambo, or…??? Jive, Foxtrot…

I thikn I’m just dreaming here, but we would both like to wake the troops up. Any suggestions? Fuggedaboutit is perfectly welcome, particularly since this is the best we’ve been able to come up with.

Hey, thanks fer listening.

What you’re looking for is opinions, albeit informed ones.

All of our people who give opinions are caged in IMHO.

Let’s travel that way.

You’re absolutely right samclem.

My apologies, and especially my thanks for putting this where it properly belongs!

No suggestions, I’m just amused trying to picture a literal father-daughter kick-ass dance.

Just remember you shouldn’t upstage the husband/wife dance with anything better. Do you have a family herritage or otigin to look back to that might be source for inspiration?

My wife and her father danced to Carl Douglas’ Kung Fu Fighting at our wedding.

It was kick-ass, indeed.

Damn it! I WANT to upstage the husband!!!

Uh, oh. No family heritage on this end…that would be reaallll bad from my side of the family…the twice-bankrupt-bop on my brother’s side, the 16-mistress-mope on my father’s side…the…oh, never mind!

NO, no heritage, I just want a memorable dance with my daughter, that’s all.

brad_d, I think you have the sense of what I would like to do. Did you practice the moves, or get it choreagraphed somehow?

Think of the movie “Dirty Dancing.” Think Mambo. Think whatever the did to the tune “This Is The Time of My Life.” Yeah, yeah, I know that was not father-daughter, but that’s the effect I’m looking for. The wife and I can do this, and will, if nothing ewlse pans out, and probably will anyway, but I WANT the dance w/the kid to leave his mouth hanging open…in a nice way.

Learn to break dance.

One word:
Tango
See the movie True Lies for an idea of what I am talking about.

Quickstep? Lindy hop? Jitterbug?

Actually the Lindy hop as I remember it is something that mostly the guy has to learn. He directs all the action, all she has to do is follow. So this would be easy enough to learn separately and then put together. Lots of swing/ballroom dances are good that way.

It can look really flashy and mostly shows off the woman. Hmm, the movie version, I’m thinking the dance at the end of Something to Talk About.

I like the dance that Robert and his spouse did at his wedding on the show, “Everybody Loves Raymond.” Cracked me up!

No, not really (although that would have been cool!). There’s no particular history of dancing skill or interest in the family, so it was pretty much entirely improvised - a few mock kicks and hand chops punctuating an otherwise fairly standard dance. I don’t think they practiced beforehand.

It was very lighthearted, but it was still touching to watch in that traditional father-daughter dance way.

Don’t tell my wife, but I don’t remember what WE danced to… :smack:

You know what I think would be kinda fun? Dancing to one of your daughter’s favorite songs. For instance, did she listen to “Free to Be You and Me”? Or have any Disney songs she loved? Or They Might Be Giants or whatever her scene was? Hell, even the Sesame Street theme song could be kind of cool.

… and then learn to swing dance to it. Swing’s basic elements are pretty easy to learn, and if you were to work in a couple of more flashy elements, you’ll look fab. AND there’s none of the sexual vibe that’s such a part of tango, etc.

… damn it. Dancing to one of her favorite songs FROM CHILDHOOD.

That’s what I meant.

Well, there are some really good pointers & suggestions here. I have learned something, and think that this idea just might be feasible with some of the wonderful tips you all have given me.

Thank you all so much!
