Recordable media storage

I have tons of burnt cds and dvds floating around. Typically I just throw them back into the cake boxes the media comes in. I’m wondering whether the pressure of being stored like that can damage them? Some of the cake boxes hold 100 discs and are pretty heavy.

That’s probably one of the safest ways to store them, actually. Pressure isn’t going to hurt them, after all, that’s how they’re stored and shipped. Scratching is the problem, and keeping them packed onto a spindle should minimize scratching, as long as they’re fairly clean when they go on.

I realize they are shipped that way, but I thought the pigment was actually fairly delicate once it’s been written on. I know light can definitely decrease their lifespan and I was wondering if pressure could do the same.

If you look closely you should notice that the CDs are slightly thicker in the middle around the hole. When stored on a spindle the surface with data should not be touching anything. I know in my boxes they are not.
