I am trying to record guitar/vocals onto my hard drive to burn on a cd. I just need something simple…no multi-tracking or effects, though that would be ok too. I am able to record through the accesories/entertainment/sound recorder, but that limits me to only 60 seconds and I need more time. Is there a way to adjust the time limit? Are there any freeware programs that will allow me to do what I want? I found Cool Edit but don’t want to drop $40 on a bunch of features I really don’t need. I’m just doing something really simple here. I understand Creative Labs has software that will do this for thier soundcards but I have a Yamaha card. I can’t find anything on the Yamaha site for recording. I’ve spent a lot of time on google but maybe I’m not using the right search words. Any help would be appreciated.
sound recorder is the simplest. though im sure other software does exist.
sound recorder does not have a 60 second limit. just click on the record button when the slider reaches the end of the 60 seconds and the recording will continue on to more time.
but that would leave you to click on record each time you wanna extend your track. so here’s a work around. suppose you plan to record a 7 minute guitar playing session…
first…just keep extending the recording time upto 7 minutes…without actually playing the guitar into the mic…then when the slider reaches the 7 minute mark, click on save as and save the file as guitar.wav or whatever. then click on the << ( go to beginning of recording button ) and start recording the actual guitar session upto the 7 minute mark on the sound recorder. you can thus extend the time to whatever length you like.
then , because .wav takes a shitload of space, you can convert the .wav files into .mp3 files and store them for your grandchildren or write them on cd or whatever.
Sound recorder time can be extended through the menus above but it is severely limited to RAm. Exactly how long are you looking for here?
I’m just looking to do your basic 3-4 minute songs. I’m not sure why RAM is a limiting factor. I have 128MB in any case. I have gobs of hard drive but plan on writing them to cd as I go. I know the wav files will eat up my gobs plenty fast. Thanks for the work around. I will play with it tonite
There’s lots of good free software/shareware that’ll work fine for what you want.
Checkout ProTools Free, a scaled down 8 track version of pro tools. I use cool edit pro at home myself, so I haven’t tried pro tools free but geez, its gotta be easier and better than messin’ with windows sound recorder.

If that doesn’t float your boat, look here for a couple dozen different recording programs as demos or freeware/shareware. www.hitsquad.com/smm/win95/MULTITRACK_RECORDING/
