Simple (free) sound recorder for a Winbox?

All I want is a very simple, no frills sound recorder for my computer. Windows (98) comes with one, but it has a sixty second limit to created files (this will be a moot question if any one knows how to change that limit). I’ve looked through download.com and a couple other shareware sites, but everything I’ve seen has much more than I need (including a price tag). All I want is to connect a mic to my laptop, hit record and capture a lecture while I type. Simple as that. Or I’d like to transfer what I have (via the line in) from a mini-disc to the computer for eventual burning to CD.

I’m putting this in GQ because I believe (and my apologies to the mods if I’m wrong) that I have two basic factual questions:

  1. What is the name of a simple, free or cheap sound recorder?
  2. Does anyone know how to alter the time limit on MS Sound Recorder?
    Thanks!

The time limit on sound recorder is adjusted by increasing or decreasing speed, but even at that you can’t get much out of it because wavs are HUGE.

Real Producer worked good for streaming audio, and I didn’t notice any particular ceiling while wokring with it. I have Real Producer 7.0 from some time ago, and a scan of real.com brought this up:

You might try that.

Audacity is nice, and it’s freeware.
I’ve used it to record from my ‘Line In’ jack for nearly an hour, so I don’t think there’s any time limit.

the time limit of 60 seconds can be extended indefinitely… just record garbage for the 60 seconds limit, then save the file, then continue to record to the 120 seconds limit, then press the record button again to record upto the 180 seconds limit, keep doing this till you reach the time limit you require ( say 3 minutes ).

Each time you want to make a 3 minute recording, just load the 3 minute file and overwrite it by starting recording from the begninning… keep a copy of the 3 minute garbage recording to use it kinda like a template every time you want to record a 3 minute song…

use it this way a few times and you’ll get the hang of it…

a lot less headache than testing other recording software if what you want is just basic recording…

however, if ppl here tell you some other software is good and works better, it probably is.

oops  i thought i read your post count as 20 or something  musta been the other thread… my apologies…
