What is the most recurring theme in your dreams? (if you have one)
my theme = freight trains. I’m either being chased down by them, riding one, trapped and surrounded by them, or something awful. The dreams are almost always disturbing, if not outright terrifying. They never go away. These have been going on for years.
IRL… Occasionally if I am waiting at a RR crossing in my car, and my car’s closest to the gate, I wince and back up few yards if the train is going really fast.
I don’t know if it’s a theme, but I almost always confuse the buildings in my dreams. The quonset-style community hall back home becomes a grey stone building, for example. Never ever ever is the building the same in dreamland as in life.
Not only in my dreams, but in MANY other people’s dreams, I get mauled by a bear. It’s inexplicable…but I’m hoping that’s not just foreshadowing in a sick and twisted tale of life.
I guess living in northern NJ, a.k.a. the only spot in NJ that is rural, where black bears are an increasing problem lends itself nicely to my demise in not just MY dreams, but those of others as well. Actually, a bunch of pets have been eaten in my neighborhood this year, and even houses have been broken into. I personally have been just several feet unseparated from the really awesome creatures many times, but you don’t have much time to enjoy that when fright kinda takes over because you are holding 2 pounds of candy for a fund-raiser and are between 5 adult bears and their two cubs…but enough of that…besides, I obviously lived, and without incident, too.
Well, I don’t know about you, but I did not have such foreshadowing. Although if I did, I probably would have ignored it and gotten mauled anyways.
Anywho, I many times have dreams about my teeth not falling out, but shattering to pieces. It’s really weird. I also tend to dream about myself in situations where I have to accomplish some goal to save people’s lives, and I never know how to do it. Example, when I was between 8-12, i had a few dreams where I had to drive a car, but always failed and usually crashed into a lake, or something. Recently, I had a dream that I had to perform CPR, but I mysteriously forgot how to.
Sometimes it is just zombies coming after me, sometimes they catch me and I become a zombie. Vampires. Sometimes I’m a vampire. Once I was a vampire in a world overrun by zombies, no shit; that one was probably the scariest dream I’ve ever had.
I dream about lifts, er… elevators. Yes, I know it’s shafts and all that, but the Freudian thing doesn’t seem to be happening for me. Umm… honestly.
Nope, it seems to be more to do with the goings on inside the lift compartment itself. Quite often, I’ve discovered a way to make it travel really, really fast. I can shoot the thing skywards at a tremendous rate of knots, then quickly reverse it to go down, enabling me to float about the cabin for a few seconds. The lift then falls so fast that my stomach feels weird from the near weightlessness. It’s a nice feeling, but a bit freaky; this duality seems to be a main focus of the dream.
I’m looking for something. It could be a parking spot, a magazine (I’m in a newstand), or a record (I’m in a record shop). Not really all that disturbing, and I haven’t had this one for a while.
I’m crossing a bridge. Except I’m either on an excessively narrow footpath or I’m up in the ironwork and cables. Very scary.
Then there’s the one with the rubber hot dogs chasing jelly doughnuts through the Lincoln Tunnel.
One is that I’m back in either high school or college, and that my diploma/degree has been rescinded because they just discovered that I flunked a certain class that they thought I’d passed. My dream always begins about three quarters of the way through the semester, and I realize that it’s crunch time and I’ve been seriously blowing off one particular class. I’ve blown off that one particular class so much that the teacher doesn’t even recognize me.
The other dream has some basis in real life. My high school (Springfield Southeast High School, 2350 East Ash, Springfield, IL 62703) was built over a nuclear bomb shelter. I seriously doubt that more than a few, if any, students ever actually snuck down to the shelter itself where the beds/canned goods/etc. are. Anyhoo, I’m always having this dream that I finally sneak down there, and each time there’s a different surprise waiting for me. One time it was a disco mirrored ball and a poster of KISS .

Mauled isn’t quite the word I’d use, but yes, I was attacked by a bear. I was camping in New Mexico summer of 2000, peacefully sleeping in my tent. I awoke from a sharp pain in my ankle. I looked at it, and it was bleeding, a moment later, my tentmte’s head was struck by, as he put it,
“A 2x4 with rusty nails on the end of it.” The bear prodded at the tent a while longer until we managed to scare it off. Everyone was ok, just shaken up mostly. The same bear later attacke another guy about seven hours later at the same campsite. We never did find out if they found it…

Water. Big water, like a gigantic waterfall, or looking down on water from a very high bridge. Driving down a familiar road and suddenly there’s a huge lake where there never was one before.
The other recurring theme in my dreams is that I will open a door somewhere in my house and find several rooms that I had forgotten were there. Another couple of bedrooms and bathrooms, nothing dramatic happens, just, “huh, here’s another part of my house I forgot I had”.
Plane crashes, boat sinkings, and sex. Recently a lot of boating disaters, and they always take place on the river I grew up near. I also dream about the bridge that spans that river, usually something happens to it and the middle disappears. Can’t get across .
Being a 16-year-old, most of my dreams involve sex, unless I ummm…salute the general before I go to bed. Then I usually dream about all sorts of crazy psychadelic sh*t like purple trapezoids and long turning spirals. Nice to know I’m the only one around here with normal dreams.
Of course, if I figure out I’m having a dream (which is very rare for some reason), I’m the happiest person in the world. I can fly, jump off buildings and shag all the hot chicks in my school without care!
