Red dead redemption thread

According to Game Informer magazine RDR is coming out on PC as well as 360 and PS3, although it’ll no doubt be a while after the console versions. Rockstar eventually ported GTAIV to PC, but it was reportedly a disaster. Hopefully RDR gets better treatment.

I just saw that PS3 is going to have some exclusive content. So, add that to your decision making as to which platform you are going to buy it for.

Thanks, that does help.

I never realized there’d be a drawback to having a 360 *and *a PS3, but there is- on games that come out for both consoles, I never know which one to get.

The phone calls were terrible. Absolutely terrible. Worst idea ever. But aside from that I just found the game to be boring. It’s like they concentrated so much on the world and making the story all serious that they forgot to make the game fun.

My biggest concern with RDR will be that, like San Andreas, there will be vast expanses of land with nothing to do. I found large parts of SA to be boring (personally my fav GTA game was Vice City) but the game was fun enough to make up for it (except the racing missions. I ef’in hate GTA racing missions).

But yea, there will be random encounters, random lynchings, randomly happening upon attacked and burned wagon trains, etc. That part looks interesting, but it could get repetitive over the course of the game, who know? The wild animals are there for hunting challenges, and you can skin them and whatnot and sell their pelts/feathers/meat. That should also be cool. Despite my caution I’m still very much looking forward to the game. Just gotta finish Mass Effect 2 before I buy it (which is not helped out by me also playing Patapon and Xenogears right now, or that I have very little gaming time).

Hmm. Yeah, I’ll be playing it. Law-Monkey on PlayStation Network.

It looks like reviews are starting to trickle out today, and so far they’ve been overwhelmingly positive. Lots of 9’s and 10’s. It’s still early though so take it with a grain of salt I suppose.

A couple of things I noted in the above reviews…

Everyone is saying that the shooting mechanics are lifted almost wholesale from GTA4 with some refinements to the cover system. That could be a good or bad thing depending on your POV. The “dead eye” apparently works pretty well after you spend some time with it.

They seem to have backed off a little bit from the seriousness of GTA4. The supporting cast is apparently very good and very well written and somewhat over the top. I’ve seen comparisons to GTA:SA’s cast and storytelling.

The map is apparently huge and detailed with towns and villages dotting the landscape. One review did compare it to San Andrea’s map though, saying it huge but empty. I think Rockstar is relying on the randomly generated encounters to fill it out somewhat.

There are no !@#$% cellphones, thank god.

I preordered the game a few weeks back and I’ll be picking it up tomorrow after work. I’ll post with more impressions when I’ve had a few hours with it.

This is one major thing that worries me. I’m afraid it’ll be huge landscapes with a whole lot of nothing to do in them. I’ll still probably be picking it up at the end of the month when I do my game order though.

The gods are good

I’m really glad to hear they backed off the ‘GTA iz srs bzns’ thing they had going on with GTA4. That change in tone robbed the game of a lot of the pure fun of romping through SA or Vice City. Looking forward to picking it up tonight!

It seems you can hogtie nuns and leave them on train tracks.

Gimme more srsness.

That is awesome. I have been showing this video to people all morning. “Where is your God now?”

I may need professional help. Can’t wait to play this game.

Looking for pros and cons. What’s the multiplayer like?

IGN has a video review up, addressing the concern that the game will have wide open spaces with nothing to do (apparently not the case due to side-quests, exploration and whatnot) and the multiplayer.

Here’s a video promo for the online multiplayer.

The fact that there’s an actual *Achievement *for doing this sold the game for me.

I went out and got it today. So far it’s pretty awesome, but I find roping a horse while on horseback isn’t as easy as I thought it was going to be.

And I REALLY like playing poker in the saloons. Have a feeling I’ll be doing a lot of that. I hope to see someone draw down at the table.

Got to play about 20 minutes of it this afternoon before real life intervened.

Having minor trouble with the horse and gun controls. Getting better with the horse after the race, but I really sucked at the gun during the rabbit and coyote tutorials…

Picked it up this afternoon and I’ve been playing a little bit. Haven’t made it far and I haven’t really done any fighting yet. I just drove Bonnie to Armadillo and had a chat with the Marshall. (I think the fighting part is about to change…)

So far I have to say though that the atmosphere is absolutely stunning. The graphics are beautiful of course but it isn’t just that. It’s the shimmering heat in the mid day sun, and the dust and dirt that gets kicked from the road. If you stand at the edge of a settlement you can see the parched desert that surrounds the area. It’s like something out of a Leone movie. I half expect to hear ‘Ecstasy of Gold’ to start playing on the soundtrack.

I had problems with the aiming myself until I activated the dead eye. I don’t know if it’s just my unfamiliarity with the controls though. To be fair the rabbits and coyotes were small, fast moving targets and I was trying to pick them out at night. That might have made it harder than it needed to be.

The Grand Theft Auto games have always been plagued in some way with odd motion controls. This one’s no different. It can be a challenge to walk up a narrow staircase, for example. Your character takes rounded turns and doesn’t have the ability to turn on 90 degree angles. Your horse also has to make more rounded turns, but that makes a lot more sense. Don’t be too alarmed, though. The game is great and rather fun to play, even if you just go out putzing around.

The graphics, however, are gorgeous. I remember seeing the riverboat and the water at the beginning and staring at it. The world is wide and expansive, and is varied and interesting. Sometimes you’ll pass a point and nothing will happen. Other times, someone will try to car…er…horsejack you. Other times, there’ll be a woman in a stagecoach asking for help, but when you slow down, two men pop out and start shooting at you. The majority of the time, nothing happens, but there are many many MANY random adventures to be had.

Lastly, the star of the show, like Grand Theft Auto 4, is the setting. The American West really steals the show and is the main protagonist.
