"Red Dwarf" movie rumors

WHAT!?!?! The ‘new’ Kochansky is great!!

WOW! Talk about learning something new every day! “Gregory’s Girl” is one of my favorite “odd” movies! I thought Clare was MUCH better-looking than the other girls in the movie. BTW, doesn’t the kid who played Gregory looks A LOT like Mick Jagger?

Back in early '99 when they were airing the early Season 8 episodes, there were “official sources” that “confirmed” a Red Dwarf movie by Fall 2000. Now it looks like the only thing that’s confirmed is that there will be a movie… I dunno, eventually. Maybe next year. Maybe not.

I’ll agree that Seasons 7 and 8 were not the Dwarf I’d grown to love. I thought “Tikka to Ride” had a lot of good moments, though, and “Cassandra” was great. My all-time classic is “White Hole,” with “Quarantine” a close runner-up.

“The Last Day”, in which we learn that Kryten’s replacement, Hudson-10, has been following the Red Dwarf for millions of years, and that all that time alone in space has worn out Hudson’s sanity chip.

I laughed so hard while watching the Divadroid informercial for the new Hudson series mechanoids - especially the part where he demonstrates his strength by breaking the brick.

Sure, I’d like to see the movie, as long as it’s Grant and Naylor at the helm. The American pilot work that was done was supposedly pretty bad; of the original cast, only Kryten was in it.

lucie:

Here’s a good place to ask these questions, I figure. I once owned the video of the first two episodes of RD (but later sold it to my friend, Caesar, who bears a remarkable resemblance to Lister). Besides that, I’ve seen many episodes from later in the series, all featuring Kryten and some featuring Kochansky.

My questions:

  1. Where did Kryten come from? Was he original ship’s equipment that was just activated later on, or is he not from Red Dwarf at all? And, is Kryten supposed to sound like an American? I know the actor is British but I swear he sounds like an American to me.

  2. Where did the Starbug come from? I’ve seen episodes where the crew are living on the Starbug and talk about overtaking Red Dwarf, which appears to be elsewhere. What’s up with that?

  3. We’re told of a whole society of evolved cats descending from Frankenstein down in the hold. Why is Cat the only one we’ve met? What happened to the rest of them?

  4. Is the date still (disaster event) + 3 million years? I know there’s been some time travel in the show. What’s the status of Earth at the current point in the continuity?

Thanks in advance for any replies. It’ll be great if they make a movie. I’d like to see what they do with an actual budget.

  1. They found Kryten on a crashed space ship in Season II, episode I. They liked him, so brought him back for season III (somewhat redesigned).

  2. Starbug was one of the small craft aboard the Red Dwarf. Originally there were a couple of others (Blue Midget?) but I guess someone in model-making got creative.
In the first episode of Season 6, we discover that the crew has “misplaced” Red Dwarf and have been in cold sleep for 200 years chasing it across the galaxy in Starbug. We finally find out what happened to the Dwarf at the end of season 7. Incidentally, cold sleep causes temporary amnesia which leads to some of my favorite dialog in the series:

  1. We find out what happened to the rest of the cats in “Waiting for God” in Season I. Short answer, there are no more cats.

  2. Where are they in time? Who the heck knows? They’ve gone forward in time at least 700 years since the start of the series (400 years in cold sleep, and at least 300 years when rescuing Rimmer from RimmerWorld).

Addendum for q1: the ship (the admirable) Kryten was bog-bot on was employed making a Coke sign by triggering supernovas. Don’t put me down, ok?

And for question 4, Lister is the “last human”, whether or not he jump-started the second big bang. How you take the “Ourroborros” story is up to you. Bear in mind that continuity in this show is cheerfully acknowledged to be a slave to budget and “who can remember what crap we pulled last time?”

Five asked:

The actor who plays Kryten (actually the second actor to do so) is Robert Llewellyn, a Canadian actor who has been in the UK so long that he’s picked up a weird mid-Atlantic accent.

Mr. Flibble’s very cross…

There’s also a pair of books, Red Dwarf : Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0451452011/qid=967571512/sr=1-2/102-3133674-3419354) and Better Than Life (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0451452313/qid=967571512/sr=1-1/102-3133674-3419354), which will probably explain the series better than any of us.
My apologies, this thing is still having problems with multiple URLs and I didn’t want another “What’s Up Doc?” fiasco.

They thought Lister’s laundry list was names of constellations which would direct them home, so many of them left the ship to search for these constellations. IIRC, the ones that left were killed in some sort of accident.
