Red is thicker than blood.

What do you do if you voted for Kerry, but you have loved ones who live in a “red state”?

If you’re Ron Schmidt, or one of the many other similar folks in the San Francisco area…you refuse to visit them.

When you’re to the left of Dennis Kucinch on these kinds of things, life must be quite surreal.

Hell Bill Clinton would probably be considered traitorous by these folks.

<snip>

What are suggesting Bill, it’s not all the fault of Karl Rove or knuckle dragging homophobic voters? Traitorous! Traitorous I say!

Umm, yeah.

Some moron is really refusing to visit family because they live in a Red state? Excuse the language, but that’s fucking stupid!

I think Clinton is right though, the Dems did not counter what was being put out there, and that is their own fault. Sure, what was being presented was too often an outrageous falsehood (banning bibles, destroying marriages, eating babies, drowning puppies, burning kittens etc) but all of it should have been disproved, refuted, and cruelly ridiculed - not just ignored.

Maybe he just doesn’t like his relatives and sees this as a good enough excuse to distance himself from them.

At least that makes some sense!

Ooh, I see hope for my future.

Of course, the in-laws might be in a red state, but so are we. Still, this has potential!

That’s just dumb. For one thing, some of the “bluest” counties are in the middle of the “reddest” states. (Caution: really big GIF.)

I’ve seen this elsewhere.

Yeup that’s one big, pulsing bruise we got there.

If this fellow has certain personal characteristics, he may be literally fearful of his safety, not just boycotting the areas due to the popular vote.

That’s not what he seemed to be saying…especially in the context of the whole story.

My emphasis.

Hmm inability to “tolerate”…the irony is a bit rich.

So what am I, a political prisoner in the gulag of South Carolina? Nonsense.

If you’re unhappy about the way our country is headed, do something real about it. I’ve sent membership dues in to the ACLU and Amnesty International this past week, and I’m looking into volunteering at the local ACLU and Planned Parenthood. (As if dedicating my life to librarianship weren’t action enough - clearly it wasn’t enough this last election, however!)

Although, come to think of it, there’s a lot of family in Georgia I’d be happy never seeing again.

It is a bitch. I guess it proves that stupidity knows no borders or party affiliations. Here we were trying to slam “you guys” about tolerance, and here comes this asshat to rain on our parade. He adds a whole new dimension to “sore loser”.

Ahh, the only blue county in all of Kansas, I don’t know whether to be proud or to move the hell away from here.

If you’re including me as one of “you guys”, I didn’t identify as a Bush supporter FWIW…

If that’s a generic “you guys” then never mind

It was generic.

I think this means I can’t come home from work!

Well, so much for all idea that all the stupid people voted for Kerry. Mr. Schmidt is definitely the dumbest of the dumb.

In case he happens by this, there are a couple resources he can use to assuage his blue conscience. Orbifold has linked to a map which would allow him to decide exactly how much red is too much for his sensitive feelings – perhaps there are a suburb or two of Chicago which are blue enough for him. On the other extreme, here is a county-by-county map colored by winner but not shaded for percentage which will tell him, among other things, how far east he may drive (about 50 miles) before he violates his oh-so-important principles.

So much for that trip to the organic farm, Schmidt!

And, of course, by “so much for the idea… &ct” I meant to say Bush. So at least one idiot did vote for the Presdent. :smack:

Whereas I will not deny that Mr. Schmidt is most likely an idiot, I can attest that the SF Bay Area is not a bad place to be exiled to, and one can in fact roam past many organic farms between Humboldt County in the north, Monterey County in the South, and Sacramento County in the East without setting foot or wheel in a “red” county.

[Since this is the Pit, I’m going to say fuck you to the members of the media who decided that from 2000 on, red (the color of Communism) should refer to Republicans, and blue (the color of conservatism and aristocratic blood) to Democrats. And yes, I know it used to alternate, but they chose to “freeze” it at the less-intuitive combination.]

You know, I really shouldn’t be surprised, but it’s fascinating how much larger many of those counties are than my entire State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. It looks like some of the ones out west are about as large as VT or NH. Wowie zowie.

(Of course, I have no idea if that’s an equal-area map, but it doesn’t look distorted that way, so I’m sure it’s accurate enough.)

I am a left of centre Canadian, which puts me significantly left of the US Dems, but Idaho is my favourite vacation state (warning, Muffin’s vacation pics follow):

Delightful rivers to paddle down:

Canyons to float through:
http://my.tbaytel.net/culpeper/SouthForkBoisieRiver.html

Natural hot springs to soak in:

And some terrific people (particularly in the bar in Prairie)!
So I guess I won’t be able to go on vacation again.

Either that, or how about trading Idaho for PEI? Please! Pretty please with Anne of Green Gables with a potato on top? You folks can’t want to keep Idaho that much!
