the sdmb is a fountain of information, i am sure that someone would know the answer to this question.
i am generally a non-drinker. we have been invited to dinner. the hostess told me that she was serving chicken curry. i asked what i could bring, and she suggested a sweet wine.
any suggestions? what kind of wine goes well with chicken curry?
It depends on exactly what the curry is like (Indian? Thai? Sweet? Sour? Mild? Spicy?. If you have access to a decent wine store, a gewurztraminer is usually a safe bet (it’s white).
Of course, if you have access to a decent wine store, then ask the folks there. Someone will point you in the right direction.
I’d second the hostess - if it’s spicy food, a sweet white wine works best. Don’t spend too much on it, something simple will do for this food. Or indeed a lager. Actually, milk is the perfect companion to those spicy dishes - but she might be surprised if you came i with a bottle of milk… :D.
There are two things that you must avoid when mixing wine with curry - tannin and wood flavours - both of which can react badly with spices commonly used in curries. Tannin is only a problem with red wines but some white wines are aged in oak casks or have oak added as flavour. Chardonnay is often heavily oaked but is a good choice if not oaked.
In my younger days I managed to spoil both the meal and the wine many times by drinking robust, expensive reds with Indian food. Showing off I guess. Now I know the rules - it’s all in the fruit, no tannin, no wood aging.
