Kevin Smith’s new movie, Red State is now available on demand, and will be in theatres in October.
I watched it yesterday and was both impressed & disappointed by parts of this film.
What impressed me were the performances by Michael Parks & John Goodman. Both, I think, are worthy of Oscar consideration for Best Actor & Best Supporting Actor, respectively; though if anything, Michael Parks is my hands-down favourite to win any and every award that comes within a thousand kilometers of this film.
My disappointments come in two forms – first the lack of development of some of the secondary characters. I think a 30 second scene with Stephen Root and his wife, maybe a scene or two explaining in more detail the motivations of the ATF agents, especially the one played by Kevin Alejandro, would help. Second, the trumpet coincidence at the end should have been foreshadowed (if it was, and I missed that, I’m sorry.)
Over-all, I give it 3 1/2 of 5 stars.
