So I’m reading my newspaper today, and Kevin Smith is guesting on “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” which is pretty cool and everything. I read the article, because, as you can probably tell by the username, I like Kevin Smith movies.
And then I get to this part:
Holy COW!
I’m psyched, but… what in the name of God is the movie going to be ABOUT?
Ima be the first to say that I hope it’s about more than Kevin Smith’s lack of ideas for new stories, and his pandering for easy money by making a sequel.
I love his first 5 movies, but he seems to have hit a wall or something. I mean, did anyone even seeJersey Girl?
I guess I’ll just have to damp down my natural inclination to dislike sequels, and hope that he returns to form with The Passion of the Clerks. I mean, he did make some of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen (url=http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109445/]Clerks, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back).
I didn’t hate Jersey Girl. In fact, I liked it better than Chasing Amy. Nothing tops Dogma, though. (It should be noted that I can no longer stand Ben Affleck unless Kevin Smith is involved.)
I’ve been hearing about the sequel for a couple years now. I’m glad to hear that it’s not just to raise money for Jason Mewes’ rehab. And Randle has always been my hero, so that’ll be nice to see, as well.
I’m the only Kevin Smith fan I know who emphatically did not like Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Maybe i need to watch it again.
I flat out refuse to see Jersey Girl. My husband said it wasn’t that bad, but then again he’s a movie whore; he’ll pretty much watch anything and say it wasn’t ‘that bad’.
I’m excited about the prospect of a Clerks sequel, though!
Meet one more. I used to be a huge Smith fan – I met him at the 2000 San Diego Comic Con, got my *Clerks/Chasing Amy * screenplay book signed by him, even own the original Jay and Silent Bob action figures. But I thought JaSBSB was a collection of self-indulgent inside jokes and not worth being made into a movie, and I have no desire to see Jersey Girl. Plus, his entire body of work as a comic book writer has been disappointing and overhyped or nonexistent and unprofessional.
I did. I loved it. I thought the final shot of the film perfectly caught what it means to be a father and was one of the finest closing shots I’ve ever seen because he got the feeling exactly right.
Of course, I have a three year-old daughter, so I’m directly in the middle of the target demographic for this film.
I was rather disappointed at the reaction this very sweet film caused: “Oh my God, this film doesn’t have a bunch of Gen-X stoners saying shit and fuck every third line! IT SUCKS!!! KS, you’re a sell-out!”
I realize you didn’t quote me, but I’d like to point out that I’m happy Smith made a movie outside his normal genre. The subject matter of Jersey Girl doesn’t appeal to me at all. The fact that it’s a Smith movie has nothing to do with nothing.
Actually, that last bit was more of a blanket statement rather than a specific response - I didn’t make that clear.
However, how can you claim to be a “Kevin Smith fan,” claim “I’m happy Smith made a movie outside his normal genre”, but then never see it and close it off by saying “The fact that it’s a Smith movie has nothing to do with nothing”?
I mean, I love Mozart, I don’t like operas, but I have seen Mozart’s operas precisely because they’re Mozart’s.
In short: You’re either a fan of the artist or not.
I liked Jersey Girl more than I thought I would. I hadn’t intended to watch it, but then my father (of all people) recommended it.
On either Friday or Saturday night Clerks was on late-night basic cable (and uncensored! Comedy Central, I think), and I tuned in just as the woman in the video store was asking for “Happy Scrappy Hero Pup.” Made me laugh out loud.
I just remembered enough that it wasn’t spelled the way I thought it should be. But tonight I’m going to drag out the movie, because I could almost swear I’m right and the IMDB’s wrong.
IMDb is correct. “Randal” I just checked the DVD to be sure.
I saw Kevin at Comic-Con last month, and he was reticent to tell us anything about The Passion of the Clerks other than it was a cheapie movie, sorta going back to basics. I think the crash of Jersey Girl meant more to him than he’s letting on.
See, that’s what makes me think that’s how it’s spelled. I remember when I saw it for the first time, I thought “Gee, I’ve never seen that name spelled that way, how odd.” And Randal doesn’t seem that odd to me.
For the love of Og, someone who’s not at work and has a copy of the movie handy check it and let us know–'cause I know I’ll totally forget to look tonight.
Jersey Girl was a personal movie, an ode to his daughter.
Clerks 2 is the sell-out, regardless of how he puts it. So he gets his money on the back-end? Doesn’t mean he’s not going for the green - the fact that he’s redoing a movie he’s already done merely to please fans who weren’t happy with his last offering is all you really need to know.
I’m sure he’s feeling a little pain, seeing his personal movie get ignored by his “fans” because it didn’t feature what they were expecting: trash-talking stoners.
