How is it that I have pretty much ignored everything about this film since a friend told me about it over ten years ago and now just decided to rent it. I’ve had insomnia and decided that I probably couldn’t watch this flick with the kidlets around.
Heh-heh…I laugh just thinking about this movie. I love the scene where they’re discussing whether they’ve ever tried to give themselves a blow job. Hilarious!
Badly paraphrased: “You know, something about *Return of the Jedi *never sat right with me. . . They weren’t finished with construction on it. What about all of the civilian contractors who were on board? Here you are, trying to make a living when some left-wing millitants come along and blow you up.”
The most important thing to remember, Shirley, is that the fun doesn’t end here. You’ve still got Mallrats (great), Chasing Amy (meh), Dogma (uber-super-special-great), and Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back (worth it for the last hour or so) to look forward to.
I haven’t seen Clerks 2 yet, though, so I can’t offer an opinion.
Don’t forget Clerks: The Animated Series. Sure, it’s in color and there are no swears. It’s mostly kid safe depending on what you allow your kids to watch. Now that I think about it, the bumpers before each ep. featuring Jay and Silent Bob are pretty filthy. You can bypass by going to the episode and the chapter selection.
Well, it’s not part of that series, so I didn’t include it. I didn’t think it was that bad, but it was a different kind of movie. George Carlin was especially great in that one, though.
I don’t know … something about Chasing Amy has just always not sat right with me. I know it’s not the subject matter, so I’m at a loss to explain what. I do have to admit I haven’t seen it a second time since I saw it in the theater–I might change my mind.

Clerks 2 is every bit as good as the first, though I consider Chasing Amy his finest work, so tastes vary, obv.

I did not enjoy Chasing Amy, and went into Clerks 2 expecting it to really really blow (how couldn’t it? 10 years later, in color, Dante is obviously fat in the previews…).
But man, the film really worked for me. “Every bit as good” is a tough call to make; I’d say this film was as good but in a different way. It takes the slacker aging process seriously, sets up enough outrageousness to keep it squarely in the category of “fun”, and examines the real dilemma of living like you did in high school well into your '30s. I would definitely recommend this film for the OP.
Favorite lines from Clerks:
“…all Jedi had was a bunch of muppets!”
“I eat c*ck”; not really a line, but that sight gag with Randall opening the glass door and the speech bubble over his head cracks me up every time.
