Best Kevin Smith Flicks PLUS: Is there anyone who DOESN'T like his movies?

First of all, what is your favorite of Kevin Smith’s movies? Mine is probably Dogma.

Secondly, anyone hate him or any of his flicks?

Lots of people hate his movies, you’d be surprised.

For me it’s a toss up between Clerks and Dogma.

Clerks was okay. Definitely overrated.

And I thought Dogma was ludicrously awful. After seeing that, I wasn’t in a hurry to see any more of this man’s work.

I enjoyed Clerks and Chasing Amy, not so much Dogma and Mallrats, or Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

Chasing Amy I guess. LOTS of people don’t like him. Most of his movies get panned by a good proportion of reviewers. I know people that have never seen a Kevin Smith film and I’d bet money that if they did they would hate him.

Chasing Amy was the best. I love a movie that has me shouting at the main characters for their stupidity, while remaining true to those characters, and the consequences of said stupidity.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was just bad. Really bad. I’d be disappointed if it took him more than a weekend to write that shit.

I’m also underwhelmed at his skills as a director (as a writer, he’s tops, most of the time). Affleck seems to be the only guy he can get to act well in his films.

I am looking forward to Jersey Girl.

My favorite of his is Clerks. Then, Mallrats (very close), Chasing Amy, and Dogma.

So, I guess I’ve liked all his films so far.

His next one, Jersey Girl, I want to like, but I just don’t have high hopes for it.

ME! I hate his movies! Every single one of them! HAAAATTEEE THEM!!!

I think his characters are all immature idiots. They are just like real people I encounter all the time, the exact kind of people that I hate to be around.

I like Clerks and Mallrats the most by far. Actually, I developeda theory abot the vew askewinverse and why I like them as well.
okay for the first 3 movies, it was actually set in Jersey, about Jersey people with Related characters (The 3 jones’ sisters, all of whom slept withRick Derris and Shannon Hamilton).
But in the other 2 movies (Dogma, jay and silent bob strike back)
It wasnt really about that, it wasnt the same small scale story as the other ones and I think thats what really made them not good.
Not to mention the fact that Jason mewes can only be handled for , at the most, 20 minutes at a time, not a 2 hour movie based entirely on him and his rampant gay/dick/fart jokes.
I know many many people who hate Kevin Smith just on their opinion of seeing JSBST without having actuall seen the other ones.

Dogma… brilliant film.

I like Chasing Amy and Dogma very much. Clerks was OK. Mallrats wasn’t that great.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Just really stupid and insulting.

I’ll wait for Jersey Girl to make it to cable.

I liked the dialogue in Clerks, but the acting was very poor all around. It seemed like they were reading their dialogue off cue cards, especially Randal, who was a character I’d love if he were well-acted.

Chasing Amy was quite good (Banky Edwards, a very subtle Catcher in the Rye reference to go along with the blatant one), BUT I have one major beef with it: I think Holden had a very valid reason for being angry with Alyssa. It’s not cool to lie so blatantly about your sexual history and then get all self-righteous when the person you lied to has a problem with your lie. Sure, Holden’s solution was stupid, but I could not buy the premise of the movie, which was that Holden was a jerk for being mad at Alyssa, so that kinda ruined it for me in the final analysis.

Didn’t like Dogma, hated Mall Rats and so, didn’t even see JASBSB. Will probably watch it on cable given the opportunity. Overall, I’d say Kevin Smith is a mediocre artist who is overrated.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is possibly one of the worst things I have ever seen. Not funny, just insulting

His movies are, IMHO, absurdly overrated. I guess they speak to a certain age group in terms of shared pop culture, something people just adore even if the movie sucks otherwise. As movies they’re not very good. “Clerks” and “Chasing Amy” were okay; the rest of his stuff is substandard and boring.

“Anyone” who doesn’t like Kevin Smith’s films?

Only on an Internet message board would you find a question so absurd!!

If one were to judge from the SDMB, one would conclude that there’s nobody on the planet who liked “Titanic” or disliked “Clerks.” Needless to say, Dopers are not typical of the population at large.

90+ per cent of the population has no idea who Kevin Smith is. Of those who do know who he is, 90+ per cent don’t think very highly of his movies.

That leaves his hard core, cult audience. Those people think he’s brilliant, and those people tend to associate almost exclusively with each other. Hence, they get a rather distorted view of how popular Kevin Smith really is.

I don’t like his movies. It’s a collection of people that I feel bad for in real life. They’re like needy people who are too big of stoners to achieve the neediness of Ethiopian children.

I liked the Clerks cartoon, though. His characters are fit to be portrayed by charicatures because certain assumptions come with them: they aren’t congruent with seeing a real person in the roles.

I like all Smith’s movies, Chasing Amy and Dogma most of all.

I can’t wait to see Jersey Girl. It looks to be very sweet and unlike any of his other films.

Btw, in JG news (http://us.imdb.com/PeopleNews/#2),

This is part of the reason I like his films. His characters are real.

My first viewing favorite was Dogma, but I think upon reflection I would have to say Chasing Amy.

Jay and Silent Bob did have some very funny lines (She was not a hooker!), but didn’t have the philosophy that really makes me enjoy his movies.

I thought all his movies were hillarious, but I only really liked Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back because I’m a fan and enjoyed all the little inside jokes.

The Clerks Animated Series was one of the funniest shows on television.

I don’t think he’s that great of a director, but his movies still entertain me. And I can see how people that take films too seriously can dislike him.

I despise his movies. I think they’re incredibly stupid.
