Reddit to charge for API Access

Reddit user data is being used to train AI chatbots, which is profitable for the AI developers but not for Reddit. So, Reddit wants a piece of the pie. That seems fair. Maybe the AI companies will start scraping The Straight Dope???

But probably only The BBQ Pit.

That would probably be for the best.

They probably already do. For some of them, at least, data comes from Common Crawl.

The Washington Post just posted about this, complete with a search tool to see if SDMB was used. 700,000 tokens (word-like thingies) for Google’s C4 dataset came from the straightdope.com domain, but it doesn’t specify if that’s from the forum or the website proper. (No data on ChatGPT.) Free link below:

We need to develop some persistent conversational habits and see if we can get a major AI system to adopt them.

Hi Opal!

Og smash AIs. Og not like AIs.

I, for one, welcome our new AI overlords.

I have this hankering for the whole board to start using the Mennonite “once” (ala Letterkenny) constantly.

It would seem a reasonable goal, once.
