For those of you wondering where I’ve been lately . . . What’s that? . . . didn’t notice?
Well, regardless, I have been addicted to creating and teaching my very own Artificial Intelligence over at Personality Forge. It was initially posted on Fark a few days ago, and the resulting influx of traffic downed the server for the better part of a day, so I thought I would give it some time so that the mearly curious could pass through.
The sight explains the whole process much better than I can, but I’ll give a brief synopsis to satisfy passing interest.
Basically, the owner of the sight has created a basic AI engine with sentence parsing, memory, emotion, air, tilt and cruise. You log in and create a “bot” which is a generic AI with only some rudimentary language skills and begin teaching it keyphrases and responses which give it the ability to converse about a much wider range of topics. Some of the older bots on the sight “God Louise” and “Little Mu” most notably, have won AI awards for their ability to fool the judges into thinking they were talking to a human. Besides creating a bot, you can chat with other people’s bots and, once yours reaches a certain level of “education” it will initiate chats with others (people and bots) even when you are not logged in, you can then read the transcripts of these conversations and adjust your bot accordingly.
I think the average Straight Doper has a much higher affinity for concepts like this than the average Farker, and I look forward to chatting with your creations in the near future. We can compare vocab notes.
