Refried beans only fried once?

Not having anything necessary to do this afternoon, I wondered why they refry beans twice…I looked at a no. of recipes and information and one article stated that the refried beans are only fried once…that in Spanish re refers not to frying again but simply to emphasize…thoroughly fried beans? Is this correct food mavins?

The Mexican term is frijoles refritos, which means well-fried beans but can be mistakenly translated as refried beans.

You absolutely have to fry them twice but this isn’t really as hard as it sounds. When you are frying them the first time, just say: “Wow, you guys look great for the first round”. Then quickly, switch off the stove (this is important), slide the beans off the burner, and then say: “Time to go again” while turning the stove back on and sliding them back on the burner. That will convince the beans that they have, in fact, been fried two times just like they were told to do. It is sad to know that even beans, one of the smartest legumes, will fall for something like that every time.

You’ve bean saving that joke for a while, haven’t you?

I worked with a Hispanic lady who once lectured me on refried beans. She explained why that restaruant’s beans weren’t very good, that one’s was good, and hers were the best.

Unfortunately, she spoke very fast and I didn’t understand her very well. It involved using an iron skillit, very hot lard, properly prepared beans properly fried.

I get them out of a can.

If you fry up a can of refried beans, I guess you could say you are re-frying them at that point.
